DIA/I.O.I Jung Chaeyeon x Male Reader
Fluff, (implied) Smut
based on Chiquerella's Sunrise and Sunset
A/N: My prompt submission for @jmuns-kpop and @azelfty for their From Time to Time prompt challenge! Thanks again for hosting! I had a lot of fun writing this fic!
Time Duration: Golden Hour
Wildcard: End the story with a flashback that resolves the plot
The golden rays of the sun paint the Hangang River in a majestic golden tint as it starts to set. You watch the scene from beside the ice cream vendorâs cart, waiting for the two ice cream cones being prepared for you. After itâs prepared, you head back to the walkway along the river. Leaning on the railing was the reason you were there in the first place.
Jung Chaeyeon.
Youâre too stubborn to admit it to her, but she looked breathtaking. Especially now as she bathes in the sunsetâs golden glow. You take your place beside her, handing the cup of ice cream as she continues to marvel at the scene.
âEnjoying the view?â you ask her.
âHuh? Oh, yeah.â She says as she accepts the ice cream. âIt's just weird how we can pass over the river multiple times a day and barely pay any attention to it. But when you slow down at the right time it can look thisâ
âBeautiful?â you finish her thought for her. Your eyes werenât paying attention to the river though. No, they were glued to her. When she notices, her cheeks flush bright pink.
âCome on, donât play with me.â she says shyly. âStop looking at me like that.â
âLike what?â
âLike you want to repeat the mistake that got us here in the first place.â
âDo you still think it was a mistake?â you ask Chaeyeon. âYou looked like you were enjoying earlier.â
âI mean⌠I did.â
âThe foodââ
âIt was delicious. That Italian restaurant was amazing. Iâll give that to you.â
âAnd the movieââ
âIt was a lot of fun. I canât remember the last time I enjoyed a horror movie as much as I did that one.â
âIâm pretty sure you were also having fun at the go-kart place.â
âFine! It was fun! Are you happy now?â Chaeyeon confesses, admitting defeat after failing to conceal her true feelings. She tries to hide her face as she canât stop her cheeks from turning crimson.Â
âThen why do you think itâs still a mistake, Chae?â
âBecause⌠Itâsâ Itâs going to change things between us! Itâs going to change our relationship.â
âWas the fun we had awhile ago any different from the fun that we had before?â
âNoâŚâ
âThen nothingâs really changed, Chae.â you try to reassure her. âBesides, if anything does, sometimes change is good.âÂ
Chaeyeon goes silent. She sees the point you're trying to make, and she wants to agree with you. But you can see thereâs still some hesitation for her, which she confirms.
âIf we do this⌠Iâm afraid that if things go south for us, that if one of us fucks up in any way, shape, or form, Iâm going to lose someone important to me. Iâm afraid that Iâm going to lose you.â
She has a point. It hits you that youâve been approaching this little dilemma far too casually. That you canât treat this another fling with a woman you barely know. Thereâs two decades worth of memories, two decades worth of emotion at stake. A lot is at risk for the both of you, which only means that if it works out, it will be worth it.
âI canât promise you that weâre going to be the perfect couple, Chae.â you start to confess. âHell, Iâve told you a million times over how I end up fucking up my relationships. We might end up living with the regret of breaking up and losing each other, but I would rather live with that instead of the regret of not giving us a chance.â When you finish your piece, you find yourself unconsciously holding on to Chaeyeonâs hand. Your words and actions have her close to tears, along with turning her cheeks bright red.
âI seriously hate how good you are with words.â She says as she tries to hide a smile. âGenuinely annoying.â
âThat smile on your face says otherwise.â You tease her. âSo⌠is there a chance for a second date?â
âYeah, yeah.â she teasingly answers. âThough you have to admit, we got the order of things wrong. Usually the dates happen before what we started with.â
âSureâŚâ you answer back, âbut we wouldnât have gotten to where we are now if that happy little accident didnât happen.â
You and Chaeyeon laugh at the joke. When you settle down you take your place behind her, arms wrapping around her waist for a hug.
It felt different now, with your words managing to alleviate a shared weight between the two of you. It felt right, how she fit in your embrace. How you felt at peace with her.
Compared to your past relationships, you saw a future with Chaeyeon. Maybe it was because of your long history together. Maybe it was because there are deeper feelings involved now. There could be a multitude of reasons, but right now it doesnât matter to you.Â
All that matters to you is how perfect the view is right now.Â
How perfect Chaeyeon looks in the golden light of the setting sun.Â
How you want to make sure that this will last.
-earlier that morning-
The golden rays of the sunrise breakthrough your window, urging you to wake up from your slumber. You have little to no recollection of what happened last night, and any attempt to try and remember would cause your head to throb with pain. Fucking hangovers. When you do start coming to and decide to sit up, you notice that something was off. Thatâs when you realize, the bed feels heavier.
You turn to your side and find the figure of a woman covered by the blanket. Youâre trying to rack your brain, fighting through the pain in order to remember who you ended up spending the night with. Though you find out the answer anyway when she turns over to face your side. Your jaw drops wide open when you find out who it is.
Jung Chaeyeon.
Suddenly, all of the memories from last night start rushing back into your brain, along with them a painful headache (though considering the situation that youâre in, you think that itâs deserved.). You met up with Chaeyeon after breaking up with another fling. After more than a few drinks both of your inhibitions get taken down. Some confessions were made. Some of them may have been true.Â
Okay, all of them were mostly true.
Next thing you remember was the two of you clinging to each other, lips messily trying to assert dominance, and clumsily making your way through your apartment and on to your bed. Thatâs the last thing you remember before waking up (which is probably for the best). The wave of confusion and regret must have been evident on your face, because Chaeyeon makes sure to let you know.Â
âI had that same look when I woke up a while ago.â
When you turned to her, she was bathed in a golden light from the sunrise. The slight smirk on her face made her look⌠cute? What the fuck is going on?
âDid weâ uhâŚâ
âJudging from that face you made, I think you already know the answer.â
After the two of you get your bearings and get dressed, you find yourself sitting across from Chaeyeon at your dining table. An awkward silence dominates the atmosphere as the two of you sip on the coffee that you prepared. Itâs only broken when she mutters something to herself.
âFuck, this was a mistake.â
It kinda stung when you heard her say that. By no means is she wrong though. Twenty-plus years of friendship is currently at stake. You completely understand her sentiments.
ButâŚ
Memories of last night start coming back to you. More than just the debauchery that would have had your pants start getting tighter. The way she held you after. Her thing of stroking your hair as she hugged you. Those supposed drunken moments where you got lost in her eyes and she didnât look away.
Even more memories start flooding in, all from the past twenty years of friendship. All the things that came off as platonic. The hugs. The kisses (on the cheek). The times where either of you go above and beyond in the name of friendship. The reason why all your past girlfriends always had second doubts about your relationship.
Maybe thatâs why all those flings failed. Maybe what youâve been looking for has always been there for you the entire time. Maybe, just maybe, you two should give this a chance. Thatâs what you try to do.
âMaybe it wasnât.â
âWhat?â Chaeyeon asks you.
âI said maybe it wasnât a mistake, Chae.â
âYouâre crazy. Our history aside, we havenât even gone out on a date.â

A bit short and more melodramatic this time.
The apartment feltâŚtoo quiet. Too still.
For a moment, you wish the hum of the refrigerator or the faint ticking of the wall clock could drown out the silence hanging between you and Chaeyeon.
She sits across from you on the worn gray couch, her hands clasped tightly in her lap as if she's holding herself together. Her eyes are on the coffee tableâavoiding you. The small, shaking breaths she takes tell you that this isn't going to end well.
âChaeyeon-ahâ you murmur, breaking the silence.
Her shoulders flinch. Slowly, she lifts her gaze to meet yours, and it stings. It stings because you know that lookâthe one where her brown eyes lose their sparkle, turning dull like theyâre bracing for impact.
âI think⌠I think we should break up,â she whispers.
The words come out so softly, so hesitantly, it takes your brain a second to catch up.
Break up?
âW-What?â Your voice comes out hoarse, barely audible.
Chaeyeon squeezes her hands tighter, her knuckles turning white. âWeâve talked about this before. IZ*ONE⌠It's done. The groupâs gone, and IâI need to focus on my solo career. I canât⌠I canât do that and keep this going.â
âThis?â The word tastes bitter on your tongue. You stare at her, searching her face for any sign that sheâs jokingâthat this is some cruel prank. âChaeyeon-ah, weâve been together for years. You canât justââ
âI have to.â Her voice cracks. You see the tears brimming in her eyes, but she doesnât let them fall. She looks away again, blinking rapidly. âItâs not fair to you. Iâll be too busy to give you what you deserve.â
You let out a humourless laugh, though thereâs no smile to accompany it. âSo youâre deciding this for me? Like I wouldnât understand? Like I wouldnât choose to support you?â
âItâs not about understanding,â she snaps suddenly, and the sharpness surprises you both. Her chest rises and falls as she struggles to keep her emotions in check. âI need to do this alone. I have to. I need to prove myself, and I canât keep being distractedââ
âIâm a distraction?â you interrupt, your voice trembling.
Her lips press into a thin line. She doesnât answer.
The silence is unbearable now, heavier than before. You swallow the lump in your throat and run a hand through your hair, trying to process the mess of emotions twisting inside youâhurt, anger, confusion. You want to yell, to fight back, to say something that will make her change her mind. But when you look at herâChaeyeon, sitting there with her tear-streaked face and trembling handsâyou canât.
You exhale shakily, leaning back against the couch. âSo thatâs it?â
She nods, barely. âIâm sorry.â
âDonât say that,â you mutter bitterly. âDonât apologize if youâre the one walking away.â
Chaeyeon flinches again, and for a split second, you see itâregret. But she buries it quickly, biting her lower lip as she stands.
You donât stop her when she walks toward the door. You donât beg her to stay, even though every part of you wants to.
Her hand pauses on the doorknob, and she turns to look at you one last time. âTake care of yourself, please.â
And then sheâs gone, leaving you alone in the apartment that now feels far too big, too emptyâlike something important has been ripped away.
The tears come before you can stop them, silent and steady as they trail down your cheeks.
So this is how it ends.

The cacophony of bustling production crews, whirring cameras, and chatter from staff surrounded you. It was just another day as a cameraman for Music Bank. You adjusted your headset and checked the focus on your lens, scanning the glossy stage set before the next performance.
"Alright, position four, get a wide-angle for the intro shot," your directorâs voice crackled in your earpiece.
You nodded absently, though your attention was piqued when you noticed the name on the lineup for the day: Lee Chaeyeon.
You squinted at the monitor displaying her pre-recorded teaser clip. The name tickled something in your brain, but you couldnât place it. She was a rising soloist, right? Her name had floated around in industry circles for a while, though you never connected the dots.
Moments later, the lights dimmed, signaling the beginning of her stage. You fixed your camera on the center of the stage, watching as the outline of her figure materialized behind the foggy haze. The soft melody of the intro cued the LEDs to paint the stage in hues of blue and white, bathing her in an ethereal glow.
When she turned to face the camera, your breath hitched.
It wasnât just her. It was her.
You gripped the camera a little tighter, your fingers stiff. It was Lee Chaeyeon, your exâthe same Lee Chaeyeon who once laughed at your dumb jokes, held your hand like it was her lifeline, and left you in the aftermath of IZ*ONE's disbandment.
âPosition four, stay steady!â The directorâs voice cut through your sudden daze. You snapped back to reality, your professional instincts overpowering the storm of emotions clawing their way back.
Chaeyeon moved with the fluidity you always admired, her steps precise and her expressions sharp. Her choreography hit with a precision that sent the crowd into cheers, but all you could see was the subtle difference in her now. She was more confident, bolder than she had been years ago. The Chaeyeon you knew had always been a perfectionist, but there was something about her presence now that felt untouchable.
"Close-up, position four," your director ordered.
With a steady hand, you focused on her face, and for a fleeting second, her gaze locked with the lensâlocked with you.
Your heart thudded. Did she recognize you?
The performance ended in a flourish of lights and thunderous applause. Chaeyeon bowed deeply, her smile dazzling the crowd as she caught her breath. You followed her with the camera as she exited the stage, the angle catching her wiping a bead of sweat from her temple. Your chest tightened as you remembered how you used to hold her face gently, brushing strands of hair away after rehearsals.
Focus, Y/n. Itâs just another artist. Just another gig.
And yetâyou canât stop staring.
-
The show was on a break, giving you time to reorganize equipment and check over footage. Your hands moved methodically, but your mind remained miles away. Seeing her like thatâso poised, so untouchableâmade your chest ache in ways you thought youâd buried.
A voice brought you back to reality.
âExcuse me, is this where I can check the camera playback?â
You turned and froze. Chaeyeon stood there, her outfit changed into something more casual but equally stunning. She looked at you with a polite curiosity, her hands clasped nervously.
Your throat tightened as you scrambled for a response. âY-Yeah, uh, over here.â
She approached, her eyes scanning your face. It was as if she was trying to place you, too.
âThanks.â She leaned in to look at the monitor, her proximity flooding you with an all-too-familiar warmth.
You cleared your throat. âGreat work out there.â
She glanced at you, her lips curving into a soft smile. âThanks. Itâs always nerve-wracking, even after all these years.â
There it wasâthat same vulnerability sheâd let you see behind closed doors.
As she reviewed the playback, you couldnât help but speak again. âYouâve come a long way since... IZ*ONE.â The name slipped out before you could stop yourself.
Her fingers paused over the monitor. Slowly, she turned to face you, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied you. Then, recognition dawned.
ââŚY/n?â
Your heart sank, and you let out a shaky laugh, rubbing the back of your neck. âHeyâŚItâs me.â
Chaeyeonâs expression flickered between surprise and something unreadable. âI didnât thinkâŚâ she started, then stopped. âItâs been so long.â
âYeah.â
-
The silence that followed was heavy.
You ended up sitting together in a quiet corner of the backstage area, away from the chaos of staff and idols rushing about. The small table between you felt more like a chasm, holding years of unspoken words, lingering questions, and emotions you thought had been buried. Chaeyeon sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes flickering between you and the floor, like she was weighing every word before she spoke.
âI didnât expect to see you here,â she started, her voice quieter now. âLast I heard, you were working in⌠film?â
You shrugged, keeping your tone neutral. âThings changed. Just like you, I guess.â
She nodded slowly, her lips pressing into a thin line. âYeah. A lot has changed.â
For a moment, silence fell between you. It wasnât the comfortable silence you used to share, sitting side by side in cafes while you worked on your laptop and she doodled choreography in her notebook. This was heavier, filled with years of distance and the things you were both too afraid to say.
Chaeyeon looked up at you suddenly, her eyes sharp yet vulnerable. âHow..umâŚhave you been?â
You hesitated. The question sounded innocent, but there was something in her toneâsomething almost desperate, like she needed to know the answer more than you did.
âIâve been⌠okay,â you said, the words feeling both honest and insufficient. âBusy with work, trying to keep up with life, you know how it is.â
She nodded again, her gaze dropping to her hands. âIâve thought about you. A lot.â
The words caught you off guard, and your chest tightened. You hadnât expected her to be so direct, not after all this time.
âHave you?â you asked, your voice quieter than you intended.
Chaeyeon let out a small, bitter laugh, shaking her head. âOf course I have. Do you think I could just forget about you?â
The vulnerability in her voice made your throat tighten. âI donât know, Chaeyeon-ah. You left so easily. It felt like I didnât even matter...â
Her head snapped up, her eyes wide and glistening with unshed tears. âIt wasnât easy,â she said, her voice trembling. âIt was never easy.â
You leaned back slightly, stunned by the raw emotion in her voice. âThen why did you do it? Why didnât you at least try to talk to me?â
She exhaled shakily, running a hand through her hair. âI wasâŚscared. Scared of failing, scared of holding you back, scared of ruining everything we had. When IZ*ONE ended, I felt like I was starting over from nothing. I didnât know who I was without the group, and I didnât want you to see me like that. You deserved someone who had their life together, not someone who was falling apart.â
Her words hit you like a punch to the gut. For so long, you had convinced yourself that she had left because you werenât enough. Hearing her now, seeing the way her hands trembled as she spoke, made you realize how wrong youâd been.
âI never wanted perfection, Chaeyeon-ah,â you said softly. âI just wanted you.â
Her breath hitched, and she looked at you with an expression so full of regret and longing that it made your heart ache.
âIâm sorry,â she whispered, her voice breaking. âIâm so sorry. For everything.â
You stared at her, the raw honesty in her words stirring something deep within you. For years, you had carried the weight of your heartbreak, blaming yourself for not being enough. But now, sitting across from her, you realized that she had been carrying her own burden all along.
âI missed you,â you admitted quietly, the words slipping out before you could stop them. âI tried to move on, but⌠I couldnât.â
Chaeyeon reached out hesitantly, her fingers brushing against yours. The touch was light, tentative, as if she was afraid you might pull away. When you didnât, she let her hand rest on top of yours, her warmth grounding you in the moment.
âI donât know if itâs too late,â she said, her voice trembling. âBut I want to try. Even if itâs just as friends, I want you in my life again.â
You looked down at her hand, the memories of your past rushing back all at onceâthe late-night phone calls, the quiet moments of comfort, the way she used to look at you like you were her whole world.
Slowly, you turned your hand over, letting your fingers intertwine with hers.
âItâs not too late,â you said, your voice steady. âButâŚletâs not start as strangers pretending to be friends. Letâs start as two people who still care about each other and see where it goes, you know?â
Her eyes widened slightly, and then she smiledâa real, genuine smile that lit up her face in a way you hadnât seen in years.
âMhm..â she said softly. âLetâs start there.â
For the first time in a long time, the weight on your chest began to lift. The past might still linger, but the future felt a little brighter with her hand in yours.
Maybe this time, you think, youâll get it right.
