Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 48
This is one of those unfortunate plot twists that lose its impact the more popular the show gets. When I first saw the show on TV, the description fully told me her full name.
We don’t know what Heartfilia means yet, but this is the first time anyone has mentioned Lucy’s full name in the story.
It’s the moment where we realize that we know Cana, Gray’s, and Erza’s full names-- but we’ve actually never heard Lucy’s yet. It’s weird, because in most introductions, the narration tells us full names. Some are left out, like Mirajane or Elfman, (possibly to hide their relation until the Lisanna reveal), but even insignificant characters like Vijeeter has one. If they don’t, then they’re either too random that Mashima just doesn’t have an idea about it (like some mob characters), or they’re a preferential name like Lucy and Jet.
Family names holds an importance in this universe-- they can either be proud of it or nonchalant about it. But when people explicitly don’t have one, like Zeref and (as we learn later, Erza was without one at first)-- there’s definitely a reason.
In contrast to that, Lucy’s character arc in post-Phantom is about throwing away that name and that pride.
