While I do think there’s a pragmatic element of Luffy not wanting it damaged now, I think he’s giving it to her in this instance as much for Nami’s sake as his. He’s literally handing over the most obvious outward sign of his ambition while also reminding Nami of his dream (and her place in helping him obtain it). 

That looks like a very deliberately symmetrical pattern to me, which suggests it isn't damage, it's some kind of transformation. Are we about to see his second form?

For some reason this chapter was really heavy for me.

This arc would have been a lot shorter if Luffy had spent less time standing menacingly and more time punching Enel when he was too stunned to stand up

Little does Enel know that pretty much every place Luffy visits is on the brink of disaster. This whole adventure in the sky thing is much an average Tuesday for Luffy at this point

Kind of hard to imagine how much it would hurt to purposefully hold on to a burning hot piece of metal with both your hand and armpit just for the chance of kicking an asshole in the face

I would be curious to see how faithful this translation is, because later on Luffy makes it pretty obvious he doesn’t actually want to rule anything and is seeking ultimate freedom instead.
