Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 119
The problem in the Dreyar family, and the founders in general, run very deep. Especially after we learn about Hades.
Yes, Ivan was evil and irredeemable-- but one of the running themes of the manga is that everyone deserves a second chance. That's why it's pretty startling to hear that Makarov, who's the pioneer of the 'forgive and forget' party, is the harshest on Ivan and Laxus, his only blood relatives. I think it's good characterization, in that there are flaws in every guild, including this one. There's no perfect man, and there are loopholes and gaps in every wonderful concept.
Hell, Ivan never got any redemption or even retribution for his deeds, since he was forgotten by the author. He was just banished twice over, he's still running free and evil. Ivan ended up just being a footnote in Laxus' character arc in the end.
Sure, not everything can be good and happy, but for Fairy Tail, with the theme of family, to forget the Master's only actual son... yeah. I'm not happy with how the Dreyar family arc ended.
The thesis statement of this whole story is ultimately the differences between biological and emotional bonds, and how both can matter and both can suck. But I don't like how this one was handled. I don't expect it to be good or anything, I just wish Ivan's position in his own family was more than just 'we burned that bridge, the end', and 'I WILL BE BACK! (spoiler he will not)', especially with so much buildup.
