bed

bedtime was difficult tonight. the booming thunderstorm outside echoed throughout the walls of your home with daddy, and you shook with fear while hiding under your blankets. you heard daddyâs soft footsteps coming to your shared room, stopping to frown at your clearly afraid state.
âheyâŚâ he trailed off, slowly climbing onto the bed. âcan i see you?â he asked softly. you sniffled and nodded, him lifting the covers and getting under with you. âi know, its loud.â he validated your feelings. âitâs scary.â he said, rubbing your back. you snuggled closer into him, immediately feeling safer.
âdaddy, i donât like loud noises.â you whined.
âhow about books? do you like books?â he asked and you nodded. he kissed your forehead and got up, leaving you under the covers. he snuck back in after a few moments, sighing and opening the book. you couldnât see the title as daddy moved his fingers across the braille on the first page, but you knew as soon as he started to read. âin the great green room, there was a telephone and a red balloon. and a picture of a cow jumping over the moon-â
âgoodnight moon?â you asked aloud. daddy paused and chuckled.
âi remember you said it was your favorite when you were younger. i bought it that day, been saving it for a time when i- you⌠needed it.â he said, correcting himself. you snuggled closer to him as he continued to read, fingers tracing over the pages. you tuned out the loud thunder and focused on your daddyâs voice, relieved it was working at comforting you. daddyâs voice was smooth and unwavering, it felt like a warm hug on a cold day. and you were so, so cold.
âdaddy?â you asked as he finished the book.
âyeah, baby?â he responded.
âi just⌠i feel like i ask a lot of youâŚâ you trailed off
âplease donât.â he begged.
âno, i need to.â you insisted. âi ask a lot of you, but⌠you do so much for me. you keep me alive, above all else. i used to not want to be so dependent on anyone, the thought of betrayal terrified me⌠but i want you to take everything. all of me. i love and trust you. please donât leave.â you cried. daddy snaked an arm around you and tried to pull you in even closer, if it were even possible.
âyou want the truth?â he asked you, the usual warm tone gone. you swallowed harshly and nodded. âwhen i first met you, i had you pegged all wrong. so headstrong. so confident, never letting anyone in.â he whispered. âbut it was all a front, wasnât it? the most injured and emotionally drained people tend to put on a persona, a facade of sorts⌠that they canât be hurt, that no one can get to them.â he continued. âbut you let me in, and in being with you, i discovered something about myself, too.â he said. âthe more i cared for you⌠the more i realized⌠i need this as much as, if not more than, you. i will not leave. i will not go anywhere else. i will always be here for my baby.â he finished, kissing your forehead. âyou are strong and resilient. you chose me to care for you, you chose to be here willingly. thatâs not lost on me, i treasure those gifts. i will never leave.â he swore. you sniffled, wiping your eyes.
âdaddy?â you called out, noticing the thunder had died down.
âyeah, baby?â he responded.
âi love you.â
âi love you, too, babygirl.â
