We hope everyone had a fun and safe Memorial Day Weekend.  While it is the unofficial kick-off to summer, it is a day set aside to remember all who served in the military and those who gave their lives.  

So, with summer comes festivals.  This weekend is the Heritage Day Festival at the Masonic and C&O Rail Heritage at the C&O Museum.  There will be entertainment, train rides for a small fee, carriage rides, and lots of good food.  As we do every year, we have an exhibit of quilts at the Art Center and then we will also be selling baked goodies at the tent that says Alleghany Arts and Crafts Center. There is also the Homecoming Festival the weekend of June 9, if you are looking for something to do, the following weekend.  

As for ways to stay cool this summer we have for the kiddo’s the first session of our Summer Art Camp starting June 5.  The week is about teaching art techniques to the kids, but also about letting them explore their interests in art.  We also, have some adult classes in the works, so the grown up can get out of the heat for a little while as well.

School has started, Labor Day is almost upon us, all signs point to the unofficial end of summer.  With Fall in mind, our Fall classes are getting ready to begin.  Our first Picasso Diva’s after summer break is on September 7, from 6pm to 8pm.  Cost is still just $20, and guys this workshop is not just for the ladies, it’s an adult’s night out.  We have Playful Renderings with Sally Grace Branch starting September 10 for a three-week session.  You can take one session or all three, the sessions are $25 each or if you opt for all 3, the cost is $65.  Ed Bordett will once again be teaching Watercolor starting on September 20, lasting four weeks, the cost is $100.  We have a Mat Cutting class in the works, stay tuned for more details on it.

WATERCOLOR WITH ED BORDETT

This is a general class for beginning and intermediate watercolor students. It will focus on composition and design as well as leaning wet-in-wet, dry brush, and some experimental skills.

Fincastle artist Ed Bordett is a graduate of the National Academy of Art in New York City and the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida.  Although these days he is best known for his silkscreen and oils, Bordett has never stopped doing watercolors, using them as a preliminary version for other media but also for the sheer pleasure of the medium’s special characteristics. His strong focus on how to organize a picture and his wry sense of humor should keep the class interesting. As he says, “a good time will be had by all!”    

The class will run from September   20, 27, October 4 & 11; cost is $100. A materials list will be available at the Center’s front desk. Students should register by September 18, and may pay in person, by mail or on line at [email protected]

Supplies: block of watercolor paper at least  9-12, 11x14; palette (Styrofoam butcher tray will do for first meeting); an HB pencil; kneaded eraser; masking tape; paper towels. Brushes: 1 inch flat wash, 2 rounds (size 6 or 8, and size 12), and a rigger; small sketch book, roll paper towels.

Paints: small (8ml)  tubes: one each: Cobalt blue, Prussian blue, cadmium red , alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, ultramarine, sap green. No black or white. Supplies may be found locally at the Art Store (inside CFSOTA), Wal-Mart or at AC Moore or Michaels.
