On May 20th, 2018, Billy Cannon passed away. While wearing #20 for the Bayou Bengals, the running back won the 1958 National Championship; he threw the game-winning touchdown against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Cannon also won the Heisman Trophy the following season.
Also on May 20th, 2018, Joe Burrow completed his transfer from Ohio State to LSU. Amid questions around Ed Ogeron’s offense, all Burrow wanted was a chance to fulfill a dream of playing on Saturday nights. He led the Bayou Bengals to a Fiesta Bowl win that season. The following season, sixty years and a few days after Billy Cannon, Burrow won the Heisman Trophy.
According to Cody Worsham, Burrow said on his connection to Cannon: "There's too many things like that in football to not believe in something. I don't know if you believe in God or a football God. But there's too many things like that in life to just have coincidences."
If LSU defeats Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl, the Tigers will play Ohio State or Clemson for the National Championship in New Orleans.
