            it  was  about  a  week  into  his  second  attempt  at  staying  with  the  ponds  during  the  year  of  the  slow  invasion  &  he  couldn’t  sleep  .  this  left  him  with  no  other  logical  explanation  except  to  upgrade  the  kitchen  appliances  .  he  was  early  in  his  process,  only  having  tinkered  with  the  sink,  &  having  moved  onto  the  refrigerator  when  rory  walked  in  .  there  was  a  bit  of  light  SMALL  TALK  when  the  roman  dropped  that  on  him  .  working  hands  paused  for  a  second,  just  a  moment,  before  they  resumed  &  the  doctor  turned  to  him  with  a  smile  .        “  no  need  to  do  that,  rory  !  now  pass  me  the  wrench  .  ”

            “  oh,  rory  .  ”        the  words  come  out  broken,  barely  above  a  whisper  .  it’s  the  best  he  can  do  .        “  i’d  go  get  amy,  but  —  ”        but  he  doesn’t  know  where  she  is  &  he  can’t  just  leave  rory  alone,  not  while  he’s  dying  .  amy  would  never  forgive  him  .  he  swallows  deep,  taking  a  deep  breath  &  forcing  on  a  smile  .  gently  he  grabs  a  hold  of  one  of  rory’s  hands,  enveloping  it  in  both  of  his  own  .        “  hey,  remember  the  first  trip  we  took  ?  venice  ?  with  the  vampires  ?  or  when  we  got  stuck  on  that  ski  lift  together  !  on  the  moons  of  falzine  !  amy  is  still  wondering  what  we  could  have  spent  hours  talking  about  .  ”

            he  doesn’t  know  if  anything  he’s  saying  is  helping,  but  he  wants  it  to,  because  there’s  nothing  he  can  do  .  nothing  of  substance  .  he  just  wants  his  best  friend  alive  .  he  lifts  his  hand  up  to  his  mouth,  head  titled  downward,  voice  low  .        “  i  always  thought  you  were  BRAVE,  rory  .  &  you  had  more  patience  than  i  could  ever  dream  of  .  amy  was  very  lucky  to  have  you  ..  i  was  lucky  to  have  you  .  ”        the  universe  was  surely  silent  as  the  roman’s  hand  fell  entirely  limp  in  his  hold,  the  doctor  unable  to  choke  back  the  tears  .  he  leaned  forward,  closing  his  eyes,  before  scooping  rory’s  body  up  in  his  arms  .

            he  was  expecting  to  be  faced  with  two  happy  -  to  -  see  -  him  ponds,  enveloping  him  in  a  quick  hug  as  he  rambles  on  about  his  newest  ideas  for  adventures,  but  instead  —  instead  he  hears  a  SHOUT  .  he  jumps  into  action,  swapping  from  his  quiet  peak  into  their  house  to  RACING  inside  .        “  AMY  ?  RORY  ?  ”        he  slides  around  a  corner,  stumbling  up  the  stairs,  temporarily  falling  down  to  his  hands  &  feet  before  jumping  back  up  when  he  reaches  solid  floor  .  he  bursts  into  their  bedroom  to  find  rory,  alone,  sitting  up  in  bed  .  the  sonic  shines  in  his  face  for  a  moment  before  he  pockets  it,  placing  his  hands  on  his  shoulders  .

            “  are  you  okay  ?  what  happened  ?  where’s  amy  ?  ”

            with  every  step  he  takes  towards  the  house,  the  urge  to  run  in  the  opposite  direction  grows  that  much  stronger  .  he  already  had  to  say  goodbye  to  amy,  go  through  the  process  —  his  hearts  were  shattered  in  his  chest  .  what  more  did  the  universe  want  from  him  ?  he  supposes  the  universe  wants  him  to  give  his  friend  a  proper  goodbye  instead  of  RUNNING  AWAY  .

            he  finds  rory  in  the  kitchen  grabbing  some  glasses  &  he  can’t  suppress  the  smile  .        “  rory  the  roman  !  ”        he  claps  his  hands  on  the  back  of  his  shoulders  before  jumping  up  to  sit  on  the  counter  .  it  would  be  so  easy  to  pretend  like  everything  was  fine,  to  slip  into  their  usual  banter,  fall  into  the  routine,  but  he  knows  he  can’t  .  he  lets  the  forced  energy  slip  away  &  lets  his  shoulders  sag,  his  hands  finding  each  other  &  his  gaze  averting  .        “  ah,  come  here  .  ”        he  hops  down  &  pulls  the  other  into  a  hug,  setting  his  jaw  as  his  throat  tightens  .  please  let  this  be  enough  .  he  can’t  stomach  anymore  more  .

            a  twang  of  guilt  captures  his  hearts  in  a  strong  hold  .  rory  is  one  of  his  BEST  FRIENDS,  his  found  family,  right  up  there  with  amy  &  river  .  he  does  care  for  him,  he  LOVES  him  .  excuse  upon  excuse  floods  his  brain  ;    (  you  were  already  inside  .  /  i  didn’t  want  to  bother  you  .  /  you  seemed  distracted  with  the  new  house  .  /  i’m  rubbish  with  goodbyes  .  )  —  but  he  can’t  bring  himself  to  speak  them  .  he  knows  at  the  end  of  the  day,  it  all  comes  down  to  him  .  his  fault  .        “  i  ended  up  coming  back  anyway  .  the  problem  resolved  !  ”        the  second  the  words  slip  out  of  his  mouth,  he  knows  it  was  the  wrong  thing  to  say  .  too  late  now  .

            the  sentence  makes  his  hearts  stop,  eyes  flickering  up  to  meet  the  other’s  .        “  don’t  .  ”        it’s  all  he  can  manage,  his  immediate  response  .  there’s  no  joke  about  his  supposed  immortality,  just  an  incredibly  terrified  man  .  the  idea  of  losing  anyone,  for  instance,  the  ponds,  especially  the  ponds,  tears  him  apart  inside  .  because  that’s  how  it  always  goes,  right  ?  he  always  loses  where  it  matters  most  .
