When National Horse Day and National Monkey Day fall on consecutive days in December, what better way to mark them than by traveling to the Fifth Avenue/59th Street (N/R/W) station to see the mosaic horses and monkeys featured in Ann Schaumburger’s “Urban Oasis” (1997), inspired by nearby Central Park Zoo.

Here is Day 4 of 7 in the 7/7 Challenge. This illustration was done in the 1992 era. I've always been an experimenter with mixing art materials. I was experimenting with acrylic & watercolor combined at the time. This was a pivotal piece that launched me into doing children's books. I was working on a self motivated book at that time about a penguin that escaped from the Central Park zoo and went on a series of adventures and meeting many characters on his journey. Sound familiar? I was shopping it to publishers and I included some drawings, ideas and finishes as the book developed in several talks I did with schools and group lectures. I never completed the book project for myself but it did lead to many other opportunities. btw Madagascar came out in 2005....Not that there is any connection but it's just something I think about. It also made me think deeply about protecting ideas for future projects. You should also because you never know. My 4th nomination for the 7/7 challenge is a very talented character designer and great drawer who I have admired on the character design group THE LINE. John Manders .
