My skin and hair literally breathe a sigh of relief as soon as the plane lands anywhere in the tri-state area. Calico, has been at this location since 1956. The 30-foot-tall steel sign, which once rotated, was built to advertise Joseph Azzolina’s Food Circus store. Which later became the Foodtown franchise. The clown’s angry grin and red tipped index earned it the nickname the “Evil Clown of Middletown”. Intriguing, odd looking images such as Calico or Tillie, in Asbury Park, have a long history of being great advertising for popular Jersey shore attractions. Calico has been featured in movies and even on Jay Leno.

The former Bell Labs building, an iconic structure of concrete, steel, and glass, in Holmdel, #NewJersey, built between 1959 and 1962, was one of the final projects of Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. It served as a research and development complex for the Bell Laboratories division of Bell Telephone, later known as AT&T, Lucent, and Alcatel-Lucent. This building covers 2,000,000 square feet over 6 floors. Here, Bell researchers invented the cell phone and discovered background radiation. The lab also produced eight Nobel Prize-winning discoveries. The site was vacated in the early 2000s and is now owned by Somerset Development. They are reimagining the site as a major adaptive reuse project. Once complete, the main building will house restaurants and shops, offices, a hotel, and the town library. A number of homes will also be constructed on the site.
