New fav in overwatch! By Tom Idril @thegentlegiantcalledtom
This weekend, I started replacing and fixing pieces of geo in my robot. Nothing too drastic yet... mostly I’m just trying to clean things up and make it possible to add more “fear” to the foundation pieces. The lighter geo is the updated stuff, the darker is old or incomplete stuff (it’s how I’m keeping track).Â
(My sketches (which I meant to share) were a delay tactic. I was spending a lot of time fussing, and telling myself I couldn’t get started on the modelling until I nailed down some stuff. And yes, a solid design is one of the most helpful things when starting a project. But, I was using mine as an excuse. “It’s not good enough yet,” “I’m having a bad drawing day,” and so on were things I was telling myself, when the bulk of the design was already done and I have most of the additions already percolating in my head. So, I jumped in on the clean-up.)Â
I haven’t gotten back to the baby raptor project (discouraged by edge loop flow, combined with an increase in workload), but this week I’ve been thinking about revisiting an old school project.Â
One of our assignments was to model/texture/rig/everything a robot character. And then, we’d have to use it for some animation tests. At the time, I tried to incorporate animal shapes and a simple design, and it worked well enough for my purposes then.Â
Now, I’d like to add more to it. Change weird shapes. Add what one of my instructors called “fear” (which basically means panels, wires, and other details that can make a robot look intimidating/interesting). Make something that requires trickier rigging.
So, I watched old playblasts, looked at my still renders (one of which is the first image), and then cleaned out a model file of everything but the model. I took a few renders using an occlusion-y shader; I put them in an image file, together, so I can draw on it as ideas come for changes and additions.Â
Tonight, after putting these images together, I started going through my reference photos (because I’m a digital packrat). I looked at pictures of other robots and mechanical components; I’ll let those images sit in my head for a day or two and then I’ll start sketching.Â
