Okay so I saw this really cool Pidge design where our favorite little Green Paladin was a mermaid and I suddenly get this thought literally out of nowhere: Avian Lance and Mermaid Pidge being secret buddies. Throw in Shiro as Pidge's overprotective pod member, Matt the Meme Merman who's chill af and a bit of a lil shit, Avian Hunk, and Centaur Keith and BAM make a reverse Mythics AU with Shance! The whole idea is Pidge, as a young guppy, gets trapped in a storm and beached on some rough rocks near the woods. Lance, who has wings too big for his body ("You'll grow into them, don't worry my fluffy little chick!" "Mamaaaaa I'm not that fluffy!" "Nonsense! Fluffiest chick I've ever had." "I can attest to that, baby bro.") is wandering the forest after falling from the tree nest where his flock is and finds the beached mermaid. Both are initially afraid of each other, but Lance who has a heart of gold and is a sweet and helpful child sees that oh no this cute little fish girl is hurt, her back fin is all messed up and oozing which cannot be good, and bravely moves forwards. Pidge scrunches up, since there are stories of Avians spearing Mer from the water to eat them with something called spices, but Lance talks her into letting him see the owie. He manages to get water on her scales, which is very helpful since she was drying out, and bandages the wound on her fin with his shirt that he rips into strips. He then struggles to carry her into the water, and accidentally falls in the shallows. The shocked look on his face is so funny that Pidge starts laughing, because Lance hasn't been in the ocean before because his Mana said that it was too dangerous and Avians can't swim because their wings would get soaked and heavy and drown them, but it's salty and wet and he loves it! His wings flop out, and the little mermaid splashes him, and they go back and forth playing in the water until Pidge hears her pod trilling her name and Lance hears his Mama calling, and they both say goodbye and leave. The next day, Lance sneaks back to the ocean and calls around for the mermaid he met the other day, and she comes back and they continue playing. They become really close best friends, Lance nicknames her Pidge because her real name is way too complicated to say. They complain about their families, talk about their friends, and yet neither can introduce the other to their respective flock/pod because the Mer are afraid of the Avians, the Avians are wary of the Mer, and everyone sees everyone as the bad guy. Until Shiro gets fed up with where Pidge keeps disappearing to, and confronts Lance, nearly drowning him until Pidge and Matt interfere. Matt, as an empath Mer like Pidge, can tell that Lance really cares for Pidge like a sister. Shiro is still wary, but accepts it, and now accompanies Pidge (and occasionally Matt) to meet Lance. Hunk gets dragged into this, who brings Keith (Lance's other friend/rival who's a Centaur and a bit of an asshole, but a pretty okay guy to hang with) along, and they all hang out until Lance's mother finds out and bans him from leaving the nest and Shiro gets super worried, and Keith can't get anything out of Hunk about it, and it's a terrible few weeks until there's a storm and Lance has a fight with his parents and abandons the nest, flying out into the storm and- Well, I'm gonna fic this anyways, so you'll just have to see what happens after that ;3 Shance and langst are my strong points, after all! Plus I love the Pidge and Lance sibling dynamic, and I wanna try my hand at Sassy Meme King Matt Holt⢠for once, and I never see Avian Lance, so this should be a lot of fun to write! :3

Note: The Ranch renames the centaurs they capture. Part of breaking down their identities. Iâm thinking maybe one or two more parts to this story. Maybe more if I get a real wild hare.
<< Prev.
He gets left out to his hunger and thirst twice more. Once, because his flanks arenât for the grubby ranch hands to pet, and once, because he literally bit the hand that fed him. Heâs not an animal, anyone who tries to give him apple slices as treats as if he is one deserves whatâs coming to them. Itâs after a week of not giving them a reason to withhold food and water, that he is declared tamed enough to be moved from his post to the stable where they keep the other centaurs.
He hasnât seen any of his own kind up close since his capture. Occasionally heâll see somebody being rushed from one place in the ranch to another off in the distance, but theyâve been keeping him isolated. Maybe they were worried heâd spread unrest. Despite how they treat them as laborers, pets, or vehicles for entertainment, the humans in charge of breaking them, seem to be very aware of how dangerous they can be if they put their minds to it.
One of the ranch hands leads him to one of a the few big stables heâs been able to see from the post. The relief from the noon day sun stepping inside provides is immediately counteracted by the smell of too many people cooped up in too small of a place. Tiny stalls line the walls of the room heâs taken into. Each one just barely big enough for a full grown centaur to turn around in. Tall sturdy gates with sharp points prevent anyone that doesnât want to gut themselves from clambering out, and floor to ceiling walls on either side seem more to prevent fraternization than to grant the occupants any kind of privacy.
Curious eyes follow him as heâs led by. Most of the stalls are empty at this time of day for various reasons, but those that arenât, want to get a good look at the new guy. Keith is just as curious about them. One of the things he canât help noticing is that most donât have their arms tied back in either ropes like himself or the fancier leather holders he knows the humans prefer they wear. The ranch hand sees him staring, âWhen we can trust you. Youâll be allowed to stay in your stall without a lead too,â He says. Keith snorts. Heâll escape long before they get to that point.
The stall they stop at is just as small as the rest. Keith briefly consider stomping with his front hooves and making a run for it, but he knows heâd never be able to make it out from this deep in the Ranch in broad daylight without getting spotted and caught again. He reluctantly enters the stall, and his lead is tied off to a bar that looks specially made for this exact purpose. Heâs pissed, when he realizes that the hand tied it too short for him to make full use of the already limited space provided. Keithâs forced to stand right beside the gate, without enough slack to even turn around. Bastard.
-
âKeith?â Keith shakes awake, blinking blearily. He doesnât remember falling asleep, âIs that you?â
He looks up and is greeted by a sight heâs been dreaming about for a year, âShiro!â Keith stumbles to his feet, kicking and bumping the stall walls in his haste to get up.
âWoah there, buddy. Calm down, itâs okay,â Keith hears Shiroâs words, but he canât. Yanking roughly at the ropes binding his arms, hooves clacking on the hard floor, as he all but dances in place. Shiroâs here, after all this time. Alive on the other side of the gate, and all he wants to do is hug him tight and never let go. A big hand cups the back of his head and drags him forward, until his nose is buried into Shiroâs chest, âHey now, slow down for me,â Shiro says softly.
Keith takes a shuddery breath and finally manages to hold himself still, âYouâre okay,â He whispers, pressing into the other body. Shiro has always been bigger than him, half a hand at the withers and even more in the upper body leaves Keith at about eye level with Shiroâs pecs.
There is a humorless laugh from above him, âI guess, for some definitions of the word,â Keith pulls against the hand holding him until heâs allowed to lean back and look up. He actually processes something beyond the fact that itâs Shiro looking down at him this time. There is a shock of white in Shiroâs formerly all black head hair, a nasty looking scar bisecting his nose, and a sad look in his grey eyes that doesnât belong there. What have they done to him?
Shiro opens his mouth to says something, but is cut off by another voice, âYou know this trouble maker, Champion?â They both turn to look down at the unwelcome interrupter. Another one of the ranch hands, just as unrecognizable to him as the rest.
âHeâs a friend,â Shiro says. Theyâre more than that, have been for a long time, but heâs fine with not sharing that with this human. None of his business what Keith and Shiro are to each other.
The human scowls at Keith, âYou should pick better friends. This oneâs about one step away from being more trouble than heâs worth.â Keith scowls back at that, and pushes closer to Shiro, the gate spikes dig into his stomach but he ignores them. If heâs so much trouble, maybe they should just set him free. He didnât ask to be captured, âCome on, enough dallying, you have places to be.â
Shiro looks between the hand and Keith, âCan I just have a minute more? We havenât seen each other in a long time.â Shiro asks. Keith canât help the way his back hoof stomps at that. The bigger stallion shouldnât have to ask permission to stay with him like some sort of colt, especially not from a human.
âNo. Now move, before we mark that one down as a bad influence too.â Shiro gives Keithâs neck a squeeze, but backs away to follow the human as told.
âShiro?â Keith calls after him, but the other stallion doesnât look back.
Itâs not until the sound of Shiroâs hooves on the hard ground have faded that Keith realizes something glaringly obvious. Shiroâs missing an arm.

Note: Iâm thinking about making a follow up where Keith finds Shiro at the ranch. Iâve got a few ideas for how it might go down, but weâll see. Hope you enjoy.
The more he pulls the more the ropes bite into his arms, but he canât just not fight. Keith braces his hooves and hauls back against the post. Just like every other time there isnât even a wiggle. Whoever installed it knew what they were doing. Planted it nice and deep, where it can resist even the strongest centaur. Keith stops to catch his breath and plan a new angle of attack. Think, focus, pulling isnât working, but there has to be some other way to get free.
âAh, looks like the new stallionâs worn himself out already,â Keith nearly yanks himself off balance trying to turn against the rope to glare at the ranch hands watching him from the fence. Theyâve tied the lead so close to the post he barely has room to maneuver. Barely is still enough to get his back hooves in any direction he might be approached from, though. If they decide to stop gossiping and get near him, heâll show them exactly how âtiredâ he is.
âDonât trust that one. SĂĄnchez said it took them miles to chase him down, and even then he knocked Johnson silly before the sedatives took effect.â Keith doesnât remember this Johnson theyâre talking about. He doesnât remember much of anything to do with how he came to wake up tied to this post. He was skulking around another ranch late at night, looking for signs of Shiro, because no matter what the others said, he could find him again if he just didnât give up. Then he thinks he might have been spotted. Everything gets kind of blurry, heâs pretty sure he was running, but heâs not certain. Then he woke up to the blazing sun, dirt in his face, and this damn rope. Keith gives another hard pull out of pure frustration. He doesnât even care if all heâs doing is rubbing his arms raw now.
âSo when are we going to start trying to break him in?â The one speaking is skinny, smaller than his fellow, but Keithâs not sure heâll recognize him later. Human faces are as easy to tell apart as a centaurs, but they like to cover their hides with cloths that they change daily. Makes them hard to distinguish from any kind of distance.
âNot today, give him a day to calm down, âtill then, no food or water. Bossâs orders.â The bigger one says, before stepping down off the fence and starting to walk away. Theyâve got another thing coming if they think Keith will be any easier to handle tomorrow.
âYes, sir,â The skinny one nods.
-
They donât give him water the next day. One of the interchangeable ranch hands tries to get close to him, and he kicks him so hard with his hind hooves the man doesnât get back up. The triumphant smile Keith gives while the ranch handâs friends drag him back out of the fenced area, angers the one supervising them so badly he orders Keith be left out there for another day.
Neither pulling or attacking the rope with his teeth get him any more free than when he first woke up here.
-
By the dawn of the third day, heâs starting to regret his earlier decision. He feels light headed and dizzy, the whites of the far off buildings and clouds seem to practically glow in the sunlight, and heâs fairly certain if he tries to stop leaning against the post and get to his hooves again heâll probably fall right back down.
âI think our new stallion is ready to cooperate,â He doesnât recognize the man he sends a half-hearted glare to, but from the way the other three he brought with him are acting, he might be the one who was giving orders yesterday, âStand up. Weâre going for a walk. You behave. You get a drink when weâre done.â His pride may never recover, but Keith struggles to his hooves. Waits unsteadily for one of the hands to undo his lead from the post. He canât run right now. Two days, plus the evening before without water is his limit. Heâs dehydrated and needs a drink or any escape attempt is going to end with him passing out as soon as he tries to run.
Note: Donât judge Shiro too harshly. Heâs had a very rough year.
<< First < Prev.
They walk silently side by side, Shiroâs hand resting on Keithâs shoulder, until they are far enough from the watching ranch hands to not be in easy earshot. Shiro stops and stares off into the distance. Keith canât tell what heâs thinking, but from the way his tail is swishing heâs agitated. Keith leans into his side. He feels more than hears the sigh, âThey tell me you kicked one of the workers yesterday. Apparently, you were upset that you couldnât see me?â Shiro says softly, words meant only for his ears.
âHe wouldnât call you by your name,â Keith corrects. They hadnât really gotten to the point of denying him access to Shiro before heâd lost his temper.
âHey,â Shiro gets his fingers under Keithâs chin and tilts it up, âLook at me,â Shiroâs lips are creased in a small frown, âYou canât do that here. Whatever they want to call me, let them call me,â What? How can Shiro say something like that? âIâm serious, Keith. They are this close to giving up on you. Things like this, attacking the workers just because youâre mad, doesnât help.â He wants him toâŚwhat?
âShi-â Shiro presses a thumb against his lips, âYou canât call me that anymore. This isnât something worth getting hurt over.â He doesnât realize heâs bitten down until Shiroâs yanking his hand back and jerking away in a couple stumbling steps. He didnât, he didnât mean to. Shiro, wide eyed in shock that Keith would bite him, and Keith, he canât move. Heâs confused, angry, and a little scared. That should mean attack, thatâs what itâs always meant in the past, but this is Shiro. Oh god, he bit Shiro.
He can see Shiro find his center with a deep breath, then step closer to him again, âKeith, Iâm not mad,â His voice is precise, deliberately calm in a way that says he is, âI know this is a lot to take in. Youâre scared. Itâs okay,â He doesnât move as Shiro wraps his one arm around him and pulls him in for a hug. Itâs an awkward angle, but still grounding in a way words alone arenât, âI understand, but you have to calm down, okay?â
Keith closes his eyes, counts to ten, tries to think his way through the panicked confusion still trying to take off with his heart, âWhat happened to you? Why are you saying these things?â The Shiro he knows would never stand for someone trying to rename him, much less tell Keith that he should go along with it.
âA lot, a lotâs happened, and if youâll listen to me, Iâll have time in the future to tell you about it.â Keith looks up. There is so much sincerity in those grey eyes it hurts. This doesnât make sense, but Shiro believes what heâs telling him.
âWhat do you want?â He asks, he canât put any anger or defiance to his words. Just, the need to know, to understand.
âA new arm?â ThatâŚShiroâs smiling. That was a joke. A completely ill-timed and inappropriately dark joke. If his arms were free, heâd slap Shiro upside the head for that. Shiro chuckles, âSorry,â No, heâs not, âI want a race. Just a few laps.â Shiro says more seriously.
Keith frowns, âBecause they asked you to talk me into it.â Thatâs all any of this is, for some reason, Shiro is acting as the nice face to convince him to do what the humans want.
âBecause I want them to see your value,â There is another one of those big sighs, before Shiro continues, âKeith, they donât keep those that donât profit them. You wonât do what youâre told, so they canât sell you, but youâre fast. Faster than me. If they see that, theyâll keep you around despite the trouble.â He doesnât need Shiro to explain what the euphemism of what not being kept means. Heâs skulked around enough ranches looking for Shiro to have seen the bodies. Once captured, a centaur is never released willingly, âJust do this one thing for me. Trust me this once, and weâll get to see each other again,â Shiro pleads softly.
His pride tells him to say no, to stomp his hooves, and say heâll never bow to give the humans an inch. Thatâs not true, though. For a drink of water, a bit of food, heâs already left his pride by the way side. His desire to survive far greater, and Shiro says this little thing is all it will take to ensure it, âFine, one race.â
Note: Yes, that is exactly who you think it is. Also, if you ever behave this way around a horse, you will be introduced to the wrong end of their hooves. Behavior you can get away with around a centaur wonât fly for a horse.
<< First < Prev.
There is a storm rolling in. He canât see the clouds yet, but the heat is building on waves of humidity and the joints in his arms have doubled their aches. All he wants to do is find a chilled stream to soak his underbelly in or even just a tree to stand under to hide from the sun, until the sweet relief of rain washes away the oppressive heat. The humans have other plans for him.
He didnât ask where they were going and the hand hadnât volunteered the information. He assumed one of the yards, theyâd been very particular about making sure he got up to a full gallop at least once a day since discovering how fast he was. Probably planned on sending him to the centaur races like theyâd been doing with Shiro. He is starting to have doubts heâll escape before that happens.
Heâd never seen Shiro look so tired and defeated as he had yesterday, so convinced that existing for human entertainment was the best he could hope for. Shiro may have always had a dark sense of humor, but heâd been an optimist at heart. Encouraging Keith to try harder, do better, because he believed sincerely that they could do anything they set their minds to. Now Shiro couldnât even listen to Keith say that they could find a way around his lost arm. How was he supposed to talk him into trying to escape, when he had no hope?
âWell look at that, NumbSkull can behave.â The words jerk Keith from his thoughts. Heâs been walked into one of the enclosed yards without realizing it. There are more ranch hands around than usual, all vaguely familiar in that disturbing way all the humans on the ranch are becoming almost distinguishable, but one of them he knows he hasnât seen before.
Heâs a big human, heavy set and almost tall enough to look Keith in the eye. The cloth he wears is different than the other humans, cleaner and more solidly colored. Making him stand out even more than his size. What really makes him certain that theyâve never met before is the humanâs right eye. Itâs bright, shiny, in a color heâs never seen in nature, and very clearly not something he was born with. It looks cursed. Like an evil token to cast dark spells with. Keith barely contains the urge to back away.
âSo this is the taur that outran Champion? Doesnât look like much.â The human stalks around him, looking him over, clearly unimpressed with his size, âYou sure he didnât take a dive? Heâs been awfully concerned with this oneâs fate.â The human stops his circling and moves forward, reaching for Keith. This time he does jerk away, trying to get away from what all his instincts are telling him is danger. The human narrows his eyes and grabs Keithâs lead. Yanks it hard, physically hauling Keith forward with one big muscular arm. His arms scream at the treatment, white spots scattering across his eyes, as he lets out a cry of pain, âI can see why, not very smart this one. No wonder the boys named him NumbSkull.â
The human grabs his face in one big hand turning it from side to side. He doesnât know what the human wants from him, but he wants to be on the opposite side of the yard from him right now. His forehooves dance in aborted attempts to rear up, but between the hand on his face and the painfully tight hold on his lead, he canât get away, âI thought you said he was tame. Does this look tame to you?â The human lets go of his face and thrust his lead at the ranch hand who led him here.
Keith doesnât waste time getting as far away as the rope will let him, âHeâs high strung, but the small ones always are. He hasnât kicked or bit anyone since we put him in a yard with Champion.â He doesnât know the ranch hand thatâs speaking, and with the blood rushing in his ears what little differentiating features they have are all blurring together. Anger starts to rear its head among his panic. Who are these humans to talk about him like this? To act like they know something about him just because they managed to get a rope around him.
The big human looks over at him, staring closely with his evil eye, considering. Keith freezes where he stands, only his heaving chest giving away he isnât in fact a statue, âThis ones a bolter if I ever saw one.â The human turns to the ranch hand beside him, Keith feels likes heâs escaped Medusaâs stare, âLeave him on lead, but take him off for the stall. If he gives you any trouble go back to full time. Come back to talk to me when heâs actually tame.â

@tane-p made another piece for this fic. Go check it out and give her some love for talent!
Note: Took me a bit to figure out how all this was going to go down. Had to give Keith a kick in the rear, so he didnât get too comfortable. The guy in this chapter is kinda the Ranchâs medic. Heâs not a specialist with formal training of any sort, but for most things that could go wrong with a centaurâs health, he knows what to do.
<< First < Prev.
ââKneel,â The order doesnât have the malice or irritation to it that heâs come to expect from the ranch hands. If anything the human sounds a bit like heâs going down a mental checklist. The lack of open hostility is a relief. After his run in with the evil eyed human, the hands had run him hard. Past exhaustion to just wanting to lay down in the middle of the training yard and die. Their daily âexerciseâ always left him tired, but there had been spite behind the number theyâd made him run today. Theyâd wanted to show him off as their tame mindless centaur. His attempts to escape the evil humanâs grasp had upset them greatly.
Keith carefully does as he was asked. Getting to his knees and hocks laying his underbelly against the ground, âJohn, support his arms.â The disinterested human orders, and the ranch hand whoâs been leading him around all day jumps to obey. The one ordering is different from the normal ranch hands. Heâs stood out from the second Keith spotted him waiting by his stall. Not because of size, physical appearance, or even the cloths he wears. All were only minutely different from the other humans, but something about his presence projects calm and importance. An aura that says this is someone that should be paid attention too, âYou,â The human makes sure he catches Keithâs eyes before continuing, âDonât try to move on your own, once I cut the ropes. Youâll only hurt yourself.âÂ
The human stays within Keithâs line of sight, as he slowly pulls out a knife. Keith canât help the way all his muscles tense at once. Rationally, killing him just as he starts to do what they want makes no sense, but the blade is sharp and he can imagine how easily it could slice his flesh, while heâs unable to do anything to stop it from his current position, âEasy now,â The calm human soothes, âItâs just for the ropes,â Carefully, slowly, making sure Keith can watch the whole time, he moves the knife back to Keithâs arms, âRemember donât try to move once theyâre off.â
The human is as gentle as one can be when sawing so close to somebodyâs skin, the ranch hand holds his arms up as the support of the rope falls away, and Keith grits his teeth against the sting in his skin from their removal. Soon enough, the only thing holding his arms behind his back is the ranch hand. He canât quite see the way the calm human runs fingers along his abused forearms, but he can feel every disturbed rope burn and bruise as the human comes across them, âYou like to pull donât you,â The human says softly. It takes Keith a moment to realize heâs the one being addressed and a response is expected. No one here but Shiro goes through this much effort to address him kindly.
âTheyâre the ones who tied me to a post,â Keith says in his defense. The human shakes his head with a sigh. Keith doesnât like how childish and petulant that response makes him feel. Like heâs a colt shouting âthey started itâ at a rival.
âYour arms are a mess of bruises, but youâve been very lucky and avoided any major bloody spots,â The human pets his lower back. It reminds him of Shiro trying to keep him calm, âIn the future, please be careful. Pulling on your lead, like you have been, could very easily lead to open wounds and infection. If no one catches it in time, you could get very sick and possibly even die.â The man chastises, but gently, like heâs actually worried about Keithâs well being. Shame creeps up on him. He has a tendency to act without thinking. Most of the time he gets by on quick thinking, but sometimes, like now, he just hurts himself for no payoff.
âAlright,â The human pats his back, âLets get these arms stretched out. Iâm sorry, but this will hurt. If it gets to be too much, tell me and weâll stop while you catch your breath. Ready?â The human puts his hands on Keithâs bicep and forearm, but waits for Keithâs nod to begin.
The flood of pain as his elbow is unbent steals his breath away. He thought having his arms bound and pulled on for days on end was the height of pain. He was so wrong. Â His eyes water, as the human carefully straightens his arm and checks to make sure everything still has full range of motion. Each joint and muscle yelling their protest at the now unfamiliar movements. When the human finally lets go, Keithâs gasping for air like heâs just ran a race, âThere you go, youâre alright.â The human is rubbing his back while Keith catches his breath, âWeâre halfway done. You ready for the next one?â No, but itâs better to get these things over with. Keith grits his teeth and nods again. Itâs just as bad as the first time.
Even after his arms are fully stretched out and hanging limply by his side, the human doesnât leave immediately. He sends the ranch hand off for a bucket of clean water, and then carefully washes the raw skin on Keithâs arms. Getting rid of the dirt and grime so he can examine them again for anything that might need more attention. Only once heâs certain that Keith is going to be okay, does he get up to leave.
He finds himself speaking without meaning to as the man closes the gate, âThank you,â Heâs been the kindest human and the most interested in Keithâs welfare since he came to this forsaken place.
âYouâre welcome,â The human smiles at him, âIâll check on you again soon, to make sure everything keeps being alright. Just remember what I told you about pulling,â The human waves as he leaves, and for a few minutes he finds himself looking forward to seeing him again in the future.
The man had been nice. He could have just cut Keith free and left him be to deal with the pain on his own. The extra presence had helped, made things much less miserable than they would have been otherwise. He was grateful for thatâŚgratefulâŚgrateful for a scrap of kindness shown in this hellish placeâŚgrateful one of the humans working at the ranch had spent a few minutes worried about his comfortâŚgratefulâŚKeith stares at the black bruises interspersed with the red rope scratches mottling his arms. He needs to get out of here. He needs to get out of here now.Â
Heâs becoming like Shiro. Starting to see light spots in his captivity. Beginning to even like some of his captors. Forgetting everything else theyâve done today because one person treats him with the mildest standard of kindness. If he stays here much longer, they are going to own him. He canât wait anymore. Next time he sees Shiro, they have to escape.
@tane-p made another cool piece of art based on Part 1 go check it out.
Note: There is a reason Shiroâs arms arenât bound like Keithâs. Hopefully only two more parts, may have to make it three though.
<< First < Prev.
Keith takes big greedy gulps of the warm trough water. It tastes bad from sitting stagnant in the sun for so long and he has to all but face plant to get at it, the ranch hands seem to think his arms are just for decoration and still refuse to untie them for any reason, but heâs far too thirsty to care.
Theyâd left him staked out to the post again. Seeing Shiro after so long, in such a bad state, had reignited every ounce of his defiance. The next time one of the hands had come to take him from the stall, heâd demanded to see the other stallion. That was when he found out no one here knew of a âShiroâ. Some angry throwing out of every descriptor he could think of, ending with nearly yelling âheâs missing an armâ. Had gotten the hand to realize who he was talking about, only to have the nerve to tell him that that centaur was named âChampionâ, and if Keith knew what was good for him, heâd start using that name too. He doesnât regret rearing back and kicking the human square in the chest, even if heâd spent another day in the hot sun with nothing to drink or eat for it. He hopes he broke some of the bastardâs ribs.
There is a tug on his lead, âCome on NumbSkull, I donât have all day,â Keith ignores the demand. He hasnât had enough to drink yet, and heâs making a point of the fact they donât get to rename him like they tried to do with Shiro. He has a name, and if they want to talk to him, they can use it. The next jerk to the lead nearly pulls him off balance, âI said itâs time to go. Get your ass in gear or you can stay out in the damn yard until you rot.â Keith flicks his tail and lifts his face so he can glare at the hand, but slowly gets to his hooves. He doesnât actually have a death by exposure wish, âTook your fucking time, now come on.â
Keithâs a little surprised when heâs not led directly back to the stable. He sort of figured they were going to give him enough water to make sure he didnât up and die on them, then put him away until the next time they felt like trying to tame him. Seems like they already had plans for him today though.
He follows the hand at as slow a pace as he thinks he can get away with. Heâs being petty, but if he has to be miserable, then everyone else can be too. At least he does, until he spots whoâs waiting for him in the training yard. He all but drags the hand to the gate, and then tears his lead free to gallop across the yard. Shiro!
Keith skids to a stop in front of the other stallion, then rears up so he can bump Shiroâs cheek with his nose. âYouâre here!â Keith canât keep the delight from his voice. Shiroâs in the training yard with him, that must mean the humans are finally letting them see one another. Shiro lets out a surprised laugh, and leans down to return the gesture.Â
Itâs a happy reunion all around until the human sitting on the fence beside Shiro decides to open his mouth, âFuck Champion, you never told anyone you had a colt,â Keithâs smile dies an untimely death. Being excited doesnât make him a colt, especially not Shiroâs colt. Theyâre only a year apart in age.
Shiro squeezes Keithâs shoulder. He wants Keith to let him handle it, âWeâre not related,â Shiro says, far more calmly than Keith could.
âAre you sure? He could be the spitting image of a younger you,â The hand peers closely at them both, and Keith bristles. No he doesnât. Shiro never looked like him, even when they were young.
âWe arenât even the same breed,â Shiro pulls on his shoulder, getting him to turn so theyâre side by side. Keith on the opposite side of Shiro from the interfering hand, âYou wanted me to talk to him, and get him to show you how fast he can run a lap around the yard, correct?â Wait, what? What is Shiro talking about? Why is he asking the human about what to do with him?
âYep,â The hand says, âDonât take too long.â
âAlright,â Shiro nods, then looks down at Keith, âWalk with me.â

Note: This part was actually planned from the beginning. Looking back, Iâm not sure how I ever thought Iâd get away with only a three part story.
Again, Shiroâs had a rough year, and before you start telling me work arounds. Iâve already thought of them. The actual problem is not the one brought up, but having been told something so many times that he believes it.
<< First < Prev.
Heâs a little surprised at how quickly his demand is met. He was expecting to have to make a scene. Maybe refuse to leave the stall until they decided it would be less of a hassle to let him see Shiro than not, but no, someone in charge has a few braincells to rub together because Shiro is standing on the other side of his gate smiling at him, âHey buddy, you want to go for a walk?â Keith has the biggest stupidest grin on his face, and he doesnât even care.
As soon as the gate is open, heâs out and trying to headbutt Shiro into giving him a hug. Which, much to his delight, he gets with enthusiasm, âMissed you too, now come on,â Shiro says, bumping Keith to get him to turn around. Before they can go anywhere, the ranch hand escorting Shiro grabs Keithâs lead. Shiro frowns, âIs that really necessary? Heâs not going to run while Iâm here. Will you?â
Keith shakes his head, âI wonât, promise,â He doesnât think now is a good time for an escape, anyways. Heâd like to have his arms free first, maybe get a chance to plan it out with Shiro first too.
âIâm not sure,â The hand glances around, as if looking to see if there is anyone else he can pawn the decision off on.
âAt least let me be the one to hold it,â Shiro wheedles, leaning down to hold his hand out for the lead, âYou can blame me if anyone has a problem with it.â
Shiro gives the human an encouraging smile as he stares at the offered hand. Slowly he gives Shiro the rope, âThank you,â Shiro says, straightening back up. Magic, thatâs the only explanation for how no matter what the species, Shiro can convince anybody to do what he wants with a smile and a few words. Shiroâs words are literally magic.
âCome on then,â Shiro gives a playful tug on the lead, and Keithâs not quite fast enough in schooling his grimace. His arms are really really sore, âSorry,â Shiro says softly, eyebrows creasing in concern, but he doesnât ask whatâs wrong.
The human leads the way, and Keith falls in by Shiroâs right side, as close as he can and still walk comfortably. Theyâre too close to the ranch hand for any sort of private conversation, but it seems wrong to have Shiro here and to do nothing but walk quietly, âI didnât expect them to let me see you again so easily,â Wait no, thatâs a bad topic.
Shiro chuckles, âWe were always going to see each other again. Scaring the RamĂrez boy just got things moved up. He said you were a devil centaur and were going to eat him if you didnât get to see me,â Keith wrinkles his nose in disgust. Some of the old mares used to tell him tales about herds that would eat anything they came across, humans, centaurs, they didnât care as long as it was made of flesh. They also apparently had razors in the place of teeth and blood red eyes. Needless to say, heâd never met one, much less liked his own meat anything but non-sentient. Shiro taps his nose, âPiece of advice. Donât scare the people in charge of your meals. He only agreed to keep feeding you because I promised him he was too scrawny for your tastes.â
Keith snorts, âIâll think about it,â He says, as he determines to maybe lay off the easily terrified human. Even if itâs hay, he needs something to maintain his strength. Wait. âWhy were you talking to him? Does he bring you your meals too?â That he could imagine. Shiro likes to talk. If his human captors were the only ones he could talk to for a year, he canât see Shiro just going mute.
âHmmm?â Shiro hums, âNo, my stable is handled by someone else,â That doesnât answer his question. In fact, that brings up more. Keithâs frown prompts Shiro to continue, âI won a lot of people, a lot of money. Tends to give people a friendly disposition to me, and friendly people like to talk. Everyone knows I know you, so I imagine he thought Iâd be a good person to ask.â That explanation doesnât sit well with him, but heâs suddenly acutely aware that the ranch hand is still within earshot.
He focuses on safer path of inquiry, âWon how?â What had they been having him do? The humans here were cruel bastards, but they didnât just keep them around for no reason. They must have been getting something from Shiro this past year.
Shiro actually smiles at his question, âRaces,â He says, âThereâs not much a one armed centaur is good for, but there isnât anything wrong with my legs. Iâm one of the fastest around, at least I was until you arrived.â Shiro ruffles his hair, but Keith doesnât feel like returning his smile. He doesnât like any of the answers heâs getting today. Theyâre all to happy, too positive for their situation.
He needs to see some darkness, some sign that Shiro hates this place just as much he does, âHow did you lose your arm?â
Shiroâs face freezes, he stops in his tracks for a second, finally a reaction. Shiro shakes, then comes back to life. Starts to walk forwards again, but without the smile, âInfection,â He says solemnly, âA wound didnât get treated in time, and they had to amputate.â He looks over at Keith for a moment, âNothing like that is going to happen to you.â
There is not much to say, after that. Walking silently until the human reaches one of the few fenced in areas that isnât just beaten down dirt. The gate is opened, and they are gestured inside.
Shiro walks out to the middle and flops down on his side. This makes Keith smile, they used to do this all the time. He gets just the right distance then follows Shiro down. Face to face, front to front. One of the few positions he can look Shiro in the eyes without having to crane his neck. A long blade of grass pokes him in the face. He snaps his teeth trying to bite it off but canât quite reach. Shiro comes to his rescue, plucking it from the ground and tossing it away, before reaching out to rub his thumb across Keithâs cheek. Keith does his best to nuzzle into his hand. Shiroâs affections are one of the things heâs missed the most in the past year. No one else is as genuinely and easily gentle to him.
âI wish the circumstances were better, but Iâm glad I get to spend time with you again.â Shiro says with unabashed fondness.
âMe too,â Keith sighs, and itâs not a lie. Everything he is going through is worth it to get Shiro back. Still he canât linger on the happiness this gives him. He doesnât know how much longer they have before unfriendly ears return, âShiro, we need to get out of here.â
âWhat?â Shiroâs face scrunches in confusion.
âEscape,â Keith clarifies, âYouâve been here longer than me. You must know some sort of weakpoints, when less humans are watching. If we can get past all the fences, I know enough of the land to get us back out to the plains.â Keith says in a rush. Heâs been thinking hard on the problem on his own, but heâs only seen a bit of the grounds and a little of how things worse.
âOh,â Shiro says quietly. His hand pulling away from Keith.
âShiro?â Oh? What kind of answer is that? Why isnât Shiro as excited as he is?
âNo, itâs fine. I guess, I knew youâd leave eventually,â Shiro plucks absentmindedly at some of the grass between them, âI just thought, Iâd have a little bit more time with you first.â
âYouâre coming with me.â There is literally nothing that could make him leave Shiro behind.
âNo, Iâm not,â Shiro says, shaking his head. The eyes that look at Keith are just as sad as the first day he saw Shiro in this horrible place, âI lost my dominant arm. I canât string a bow or anything requiring finesse. About all Iâm good for is dragging heavy things and running races. There isnât a place out there for me anymore.â Keithâs gaping, mouth hanging open like a fish out water. Shiro reaches over and pushes his mouth closed, âYouâre going to catch flies,â He says with a smile that doesnât reach his eyes.
Keithâs mind is spinning, his heart hurting in his chest, âB-but I want you there, with me,â Itâs all heâs wanted for so long. He thinks heâs going to cry.
âHey now, itâs alright,â Shiroâs hand is on his neck, squeezing reassuringly, âAs long as thereâs no fuss, they treat me okay.â Fuss? So as long as he does everything they want.
âThey lock you in at night!â Shiroâs hand claps over his mouth.
âShhhh, someone will hear you,â Shiro hisses.
Keith nods his understanding, and Shiro removes his hand, âHow can this be a better place for you, than free on the plains with me?â Keith says, much more quietly.
Shiro scrubs at his forelock, âSay I went with you. We both escaped, somehow, without getting caught. What kind of life would I have? I canât help you hunt or trap. Iâd be a liability in a fight. What would I do all day, sit around and eat grass? Waiting on you to help me with the simplest tasks?â Shiro deflates with a sigh, âI wonât drag you down like that.â
âWeâll figure it out,â He wonât let Shiro waste away. Theyâll find a way, because they need to.
âThatâs a nice sentiment, butâŚâ Shiro shakes his head, âI donât want to talk about this anymore. Can we just enjoy being out in the grass together again?â
âYouâre not the first person to lose an arm, Shiro. You wonât be useless.â Heâs never met another centaur without one, but he knows they exist and donât just wander off to die when it happens.
âKeith, stop. Please. No more. Not right now,â Shiro looks so tired, but he canât leave off, not yet.
âNo, I donât know when Iâll see you again, and Iâm not leaving here without you.â That hasnât changed.
âTwo days, weâll see each other again in two days.â Shiro says, âIf youâre still here, we can talk about this then, but for now, please, let me just enjoy this.â
Keith almost starts to argue, before he realizes heâs getting no further with Shiro today, âWeâre talking about this again in two days.â And theyâll keep talking about it until he convinces him.
