Ik I've made a post about it before but hospitals don't always have the ability to cater to life or death food allergies and are often not up front about this when admitting patients.
Yesterday I had to take my roomate to the hospital. He is allergic to soy, dairy, most tree nuts, several fruits, and he has severe celiacs, so no gluten whatsoever.
Little backstory, we are both disabled, and I am his advocate in situations like these, generally I am his caregiver, though I'd say it goes both ways.
So he is being pushed to accept hospitalization, and I am agreeing until I ask about food. The nurse says "it's a hospital, why wouldn't we be able to accomidate"
I am more direct, and say "many hospitals can't, I don't mind walking to the cafeteria to confirm." She seems to get frustrated but says she will call them and leaves after belittling me for having her check.
When she returns I'm told "they cannot guarantee any of the foods we have will be allergen free, but nothing in life is 100%"
My roomate came to the hospital because he was bleeding from ulcers caused by accidentally getting a single speck of grain alcohol based hand sanitizer on his tounge.
Td;lr hospitals don't always provide for allergens, and when I brought this up in a hospital with a nurse, I was basically told the patient should just eat allergens
Gluten free chips
It's so weird having celiac disease because it's an invisible disability and my parents kniw it's an invisible disability
Yet, when I have a reaction, they forget that I won't ever "look" sick
I mean I can grimace and all but I went untreated for at least 3 years meaning I learnt how to stop looking like I was in pain
Also, I know I had higher energy earlier but that was before I did half of my morning routine and started feeling like I was gonna throainissit (throw up, faint, piss, and shit, all at the same time) and now they're acting like since I had some energy when I just woke up I should go to school
I will throainissit if I go to school, I don't not want to do that shit in public
Celiacs and people with diabetes shaking hands meme, it says “people assuming you just eat different and it’s not a real systemic disability with serious impacts.”
Anyway, solidarity with diabetics always. It’s unreal how dismissive people are, and it’s not acceptable. Y’all deserve safety and affordable care.
Y’all are disabled and chronically ill too, you face serious and constant ableism. You should always be included in disability justice.
I love you and I hope your day is going ok today!

Rant !!!
☆
I always find it so bs that Celiacs are the ones having to pay the price(LITERALLY) for their food allergy/autoimmune disorder. Not even just fuckass prices but the ignorance as a whole on Celiac Disease. Someone can say they have a peanut allergy and they'll typically be believed no questions asked, say you have celiac and suddenly we're in an interrogation having to prove something. "Well back in my day.." back in your day we fucking died of malnutrition or just had a diet of pure bananas Linda.
Like never in my life have I seen dairy free, nut free, soy free, etc be anywhere near as expensive as gluten free food. God forbid I dont want food with the price jacked up the ass in an already unaffordable world. Ntm the overall lack of food as a whole??? Like what? You just want me to eat the same three options on the market for the rest of my life and then on top of that the stores may just stop carrying that food option all together and we'll never see it again. A lot of shit is either uncertified, cross-contaminated, has wheat byproducts, or we're just being straight up lied to.
Like holy shit man, I just want to be able to eat food without thinking it might poison me, bankrupt me, or just randomly stop being made.
One of the only upsides of having celiac is that I’m also autistic and celiac gives me a very good excuse to not eat things I don’t want to when someone offers me food. Unfortunately it does also mean I had to say no to someone offering me a chocolate croissant
