Celestial Stag

Gifted with human intelligence, the Celestial Stag roamed the underworld of Chinese mythology. They were often thought to be the undead spirits of human miners, killed by a cave-in. None have ever seen such a stag in clear light and lived to tell the tale, but they are sometimes described as black-eyed and black-furred. 

When it encountered lost miners, the stag would offer to guide them towards rare gems in exchange for being shown a way to the surface. Some variations say that the stag would even torture the miners for this information, ganging up to trap them in the mines. However, if it stepped into the open air, the stag would dissolve into a noxious liquid or plasma. This plasma can kill any who breath in its fumes, an even spread rot and disease across the land.

According to JM de Groot, some miners took to tricking the stags into showing them the richest seams, promising to go up in the lift first and then send it back down to raise the stag to the surface, but instead cutting the ropes to drop the creature to its death.
