Creating the Ceiling grid
For general instruction on making a ceiling gride, see the lesson created originally for the Cafe Concept project.
Create a ceiling grid for all the rooms.
Probably the easiest and quickest way is to make a marquee around everything [1], and choose AEC > Create Polys from Walls… [2] (Net Area option). This will create a polygon for each of the fully-enclosed spaces. NOTE: if there are some faults in the polygon creation, don't worry for now: the main thing is that the entire dining hall area is in a single polygon.
(Optional) Give the polygons a slight fill.
While they're selected, choose a light-coloured solid fill from the Attributes palette [1]. This will help you note whether their presence later, when you wish to edit them. Then assign them to the A-CLNG-Susp Class [2].
Turn the dining hall polygon into a ceiling grid by the "infection" method.
With A-CLNG-Susp as the Active Class [1], choose the Ceiling Grid tool [2] and make a small piece of ceiling grid with it over the dining hall ceiling polygon [3]. Then Shift-select the dining hall polygon, too, and Modify > Add Surface them together.
Adjust the ceiling grid to suit.
Change its orientation to what it is in reality by changing its default Angle of 0° to 90 [1]. Then (with the Selection tool) drag its handle to the top right corner, to maximize the use of whole ceiling tiles [2].
Clip out the part of the ceiling grid that tilts up.
To do this, first Send to Back (⌘B; Windows: Ctrl+B) to reveal the rest of the plan. Then use the Crop tool [1] in standard rectangular mode [2] – starting from the point where the two slanted ceiling grids start [3].
Clip the diagonal bit off, too.
For this, use the Clip tool in polygon mode
Raise the ceiling grid to the appropriate height.
Select it, and in its Obj Info palette, change its z from the default 0 to 8', and press Enter to apply.
Make the roof above.
It's a flat roof, set within the tops of the four exterior walls, so to make it, select the four walls [1], AEC > Create Polys from Walls… [2], choose the Net Area option [3].
Move it to the Roof level, and Floor…
Cut it to the Clipboard, go up to the Roof layer, and Paste in Place (or change its Layer to Roof Level in its Obj Info palette), then Floor… it, give it a Bottom Z = -12" and a Thickness of 12. For the sake of simplicity, assign it to A-FLOOR-Conc.
Creating a (suspended) ceiling plan
The Ceiling Grid tool makes 3D ceiling tile systems that can be hoisted to the desired height, textured and rendered. This lesson describes various techniques involved in making it and editing it.
Creating a ceiling grid – Method #1
The Ceiling Grid tool can be found both in the Furn/Fixtures and in the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) toolsets [1]. It's applied like a polygon: click at the each of the inside corners in sequence [2]. If you get one of the clicks wrong [3 – shown here exaggerated], don't worry: it's easily fixed. Double-click when you reach the starting point again. As you can see, the result is a tiled polygon with a 4' x 2' tile pattern, by default.
Creating a ceiling grid – other method
The other – and my personal favourite – method of creating ceiling grids is to exploit the fact that ceiling grids are "infectious": if you put a piece of ceiling grid over a polygon of your ceiling area [1], then add them together (select the two and choose Modify > Add Surface [2], the ceiling grid "infects the larger polygon, which turns into a ceiling grid itself. [3] NOTE: The ceiling area polygon can be made as a series of overlapping rectangles and other polygons which are Add Surfaced together, or by selecting all the surrounding walls and choosing AEC > Create Polys from Walls… [4], then choose the Net Area option.
Move ceiling grid handle to minimize tile wastage.
Every ceiling grid has a single blue handle situated at one of the grid junctions [1], which you typically drag to one of the ceiling corners, to maximize the use of whole ceiling tiles and thus minimize cutting and wastage of tiles [2]. NOTE: If you're dealing with an existing ceiling tile system that isn't to be changed, move the handle to correspond to how it is in reality.
Change tile orientation if necessary.
By default, 2' x 4' tiles are used [1] in a horizontal orientation. If your tile orientation is different, however, you can type in a different angle [2]. NOTE: Remember to press Enter to see the effect -- or tab to the next field.
Make a Class for suspended ceilings.
Either make an entirely new Class, and rename it [1], or take advantage of the fact that the AIA_Architectural.sta list has one ready-made, and Import it from there. NOTE: You can Command-select (Windows: Ctrl-select) several such Classes non-contiguously at once.
Set the new Class's attributes.
Remember to Use at Creation [1]. Make the Fill Solid white [2], and the line weight 0.13, and a colour of your choice [3]. If you anticipate rendering this in 3D views, choose a suitable Texture under Other [4, 5]. NOTE: You'll find several ceiling grid-specific textures through the Resource Browser top right popdown arrowhead [6] in the Libraries > Textures > Textures_Interior Finishes file. This file has many useful textures, so you may want to add it as one of your Favorites.
Assign the ceiling grid object to its intended Class.
Select it, and assign it from the Class popdown in the Obj Info palette.
