they decide to split up. unfortunately, it’s not kana and minhyun that decide to split up, like she wishes, but the members of their rotation. she doesn’t really want to have anything to do with minhyun, but when they suggest splitting up into pairs to cover more ground and hunt more monsters, and people start splitting off, nobody really offers to pair up with either of them.

“i’ll take him,” she volunteers, aggression seeping into her tone so it sounds more like a threat than anything, but she flashes a smile as reassurance to everyone before she sets out in a direction a good distance from any of the other heroes. honestly, whether minhyun follows or not isn’t that much of a concern to her. they’re both capable of defending themselves against a lot more than a couple monsters, though the rest of the league doesn’t really know that.

there’s a lot kana knows about minhyun that nobody else does, and vice versa. it’s a strange and invasive kind of familiarity. maybe in another life outside of the two they’ve already lived, they could be friends. now, however, it’s unlikely, or impossible. they’re too similar in all the wrong ways and too different in all the wrong ways.

for example, kana knows minhyun didn’t object to the resistance killing taeyong. she thinks he actually agreed with it. she thinks he’d kill him himself if he thought he had to, but she also doesn’t think he’d do it without a general consensus, and that last part scares her more than anything.

so maybe that’s why she hopes he does follow her. they have a lot to talk about, and kana doesn’t want to risk minhyun talking too much to anyone else.

“so, rumor has it rookies are getting promoted to new teams soon, and that’s why the governing body is doing all of this. bet it would be nice for you to finally be something other than nightshade, huh?” she flashes minhyun a vaguely condescending smile, but doesn’t keep eye contact for long, searching for the closest monster instead. 

sure enough, one appears, and she readies her whip. she resists making some comment about how minhyun can fight a d level monster since she’s here to supervise, because she doesn’t actually want to put too much salt in the wounds of the first timeline. god knows she has her own. 

“do your best,” she says instead, and she means it even if it sounds more like a challenge.

the weather was warm but not smothering - the perfect temperature for him to run an errand comfortably. hyunbin was sent to get a few groceries from the market not too far from the store. don’t get too much, you know you can’t carry ten bags back. junghee had warned him but his inability to mind properly made is what made hyunbin, hyunbin.

it wasn’t exactly ten bags per se, a healthy amount of five plastic bags hanging from his arms and aching fingers. hyunbin had made it halfway when he stopped for a rest - navigating himself from the moving crowds into a tiny space nestled between two buildings. the card’s sore fingers cried in relief as the bags were carefully placed on the ground. he sighs, leaning his head against the bricking of the building - momentarily oblivious to the company that awoke deep within the alley.

in a situation where boys have to live with other boys, it shouldn’t be all that shocking for one to see the other without a shirt – but kenta overreacts every time anyway, making a show out of turning away, covering his eyes or straight up running out of the room. it’s just about being polite, he says, as if minhyun can’t feel kenta’s embarrassed feelings through their bond.

but today, he has to deal with it. minhyun is hurt, having run into some monster while he was out – and although the wound isn’t really that bad at all, kenta insisted on helping him dress it as soon as he came home ( after having a two-minute-long freak out about it first, of course. ) the wound in question is a small gash on the bottom of minhyun’s left shoulder blade, towards the middle of his back, so kenta couldn’t get to it without minhyun’s shirt coming off. kenta sits perched on the couch and minhyun sits on his knees on the floor in front of him, facing away so that kenta can properly reach his injury without having to stand on his tip-toes.

once he gets past his initial… blushyness, kenta is more serious, chatting at minhyun a little as he applies ointment to the cut, and then gauze from the first aid box that their manager makes them keep somewhere in the dorm.

“i knew you should’ve taken me out this time,” kenta huffs, not for the first time since minhyun’s return. “i have to worry about you so much when i’m not there! and i read somewhere that stress make your hair turn grey faster.” even as he complains, ( lightheartedly, for the most part, because they both know that kenta is not mortal and therefore will never age enough to have grey hair. ) kenta gently places the clear medical tape over the edge of the gauze. 

it’s when he’s carefully smoothing the tape down on his skin that kenta notices another marking, around the same size except white, a little ways away from where his hands are currently, and then another scar up closer to the top of minhyun’s shoulder. there are a couple less prominent ones here and there, and presumably, there are more in other places than minhyun’s back, too.

oh.  kenta’s movements slow as he stares, hands resting near the gauze on minhyun’s back. minhyun questions him, but kenta doesn’t answer right away. he reaches out, hand leaving minhyun’s dressed wound to instead, lightly touch one of the white lines he can see. “…when did this happen]?”

kenta can see and feel minhyun’s body tensing, shoulders drawing up as kenta begins tracing a finger over both of the prominent scars he can see. “a while ago,” the hero replies, and kenta can sense some apprehension in his voice.

minhyun shifts underneath him, asking whether or not kenta is done with the gauze because i have work to do, hyung, and kenta hums back “right, right” and goes back to applying the tape.

but he’s frowning. all of these old wounds, this pain that he could’ve prevented if he’d been able to protect minhyun sooner… he feels guilty.

“i won’t let you get any more scars like those,” he says abruptly, and he’s a little surprised – he meant to say it in his head. but since he heard himself say it, his determination becomes more solid. his tone, usually light and fairly bubbly, is subdued for once, soft, but sincere.

“as long as i’m your card, i won’t let you get hurt anymore. okay? no more scars.” he smoothes the gauze down one last time, sitting back as he lets his hands fall.

one of the facts that kenta had to learn four years ago about living in a human body is that they need to sleep.  to stay healthy, one must shut the body for 8-10 hours per night ( on a good night ) and get right back to Life in the morning. it’s not the most time efficient habit but, unfortunately, necessary if you want to lie in a human body in a human world. 

kenta is good at a lot of things, but sleeping isn’t one of them. 

it’s hard for his brain to settle down, and sometimes he’s stuck awake until the dead of night, even when they have practise in the morning. he occupies himself with reading comments and articles, and, sometimes, fan-made, er, material. ( he claims he wants to understand the way that they perceive the group, and what better way to do that than reading their fanfic? he skips all the bad parts... well, most of them anyway. ) he normally goes through this alone in his bed -- but not always. 

“i wonder what college would be like.”

he says this as his eyes remain glued to the screen of his i-phone, the tiny words on a white background depicting a college au, a fan-written story where kenta and their groupmates are students instead of singers, members of a frat house instead of an idol group. it’s completely fictional, but kenta finds it fascinating. the author seems to think kenta would major in astrology ( which kenta can’t confirm nor deny because he doesn’t know what that actually means ) and minhyun is written as a business major. sometimes, fanfictions are scarily accurate -- but sometimes they’re so off that kenta has a good laugh about it ( and then he worries about what kind of image they must be showing to their fans. )

when he finally tears his gaze away from the phone, he sees that minhyun isn’t looking at him. the hero, who was kind enough to to lend him his company in the first place, even if it’s just reading together in minhyun’s bed for a little while, is still paying attention to his book --and definitely not paying attention to him. the book can’t be that good. “minhyun.” he lifts his head from his hero’s shoulder and nudges him lightly with his elbow instead.

“kim jonghyun?” a voice asks from behind him, and jonghyun jumps a little in surprise before getting up from his seat and turning to meet the newcomer.

“yeah, hwang minhyun? it’s nice to m—.” jonghyun trails off, mouth slightly agape. holy shit.

sing —  write a drabble of my character singing to yours.

singing for him comes naturally. he didn’t do it professionally, nor did he ever desire to. taehyung considers singing a hobby and a stress reliever. it was a way for him to calm down to sing at the top of his lungs, but sometimes he felt some peace in himself if he sings even lowly to soonshim for her to calm down or fall asleep. using his voice in an artistic and melodic way was some sort of medicine for him. 

it’s why when minhyun asks him to sing him a song out of the blue, taehyung is not only surprised but a bit reluctant. he didn’t want to be criticized by minhyun since he did singing professionally along with everyone else in me.a. but, with just a deep breath, he says okay after being reassured once again that he won’t be a critic. he wouldn’t say anything or give advice. 

“don’t cringe at me either,” taehyung tells minhyun before he waits for a few seconds of silence to aid him before he begins. 

“do you know? i can’t fall asleep,” he starts off in a soft voice, intending it to bring the same mood the singer of the song shows. “do you know? i can’t have a dream. even if i’m not in your arms, you fall asleep comfortably. you have a dream peacefully. i stay awake all night.”

it's 5am and it’s still dark out, though the birds have started chirping and the morning traffic is already picking up -- and there is no good reason that kenta should be outside the door to their dorm, fiddling with the lock as quietly as he can as he tries to sneak back in while the others are sleeping. 

it’s not like he was up to any troube. it's just another night where kenta wanted to see his twin card. lately, it's been harder to get out to go see him without sneaking out and, though he knows there's a good reason why they don't want him out at night, he keeps breaking the rule anyway. he's the luck card and, for the most part, his luck rarely fails on him. on the rare occasion that it does, it's either something minor, or his luck kicks back in at the last second. so of course kenta believes he really shouldn’t be the one people are worried about, but no one seems to understand him and he can't help but feel a little bit frustrated.

that being said, he wouldn’t directly defy his leader like this if it weren’t for how badly he wants to see yongguk. but he he usually only stays for a few hours -- leaves when the rest of M.Ea is asleep, taxis to yongguk's apartment, takes a nap there, comes back before they wake up, then falls asleep again; it's a ritual that definitely deprives him of a good night's rest but he doesn't really care, it's a sacrifice worth making when it comes to his best friend.

to his relief, no one is in the living room when he opens the door. kenta makes it through with no sound, and he exhales. he really is lucky.

he takes off his shoes at the door, leaving them neatly arranged beside the others' like he had them before and starts padding off toward the hyung line's room, but as he passes the kitchen on the way he catches the glimpse of a shadowy figure out of the corner of his eye, and jumps -- but after a second, he blinks and recognizes the form of the group leader, looking at him.

oh. 

okay, maybe he’s not so lucky today.
