Chapter 1: Closing Shift

Her face is ethereal on-screen. Feathered out at the edges in a soft halo of light, a glowing marriage of the show’s camera quality and the telly’s age. It’s old, donated by the manager. He thought it would be nice for the customers to have it playing, but I turn it inwards to me every shift. The sound is a bit busted—every peak of background music or sharp word is accompanied by a quick, electric squeak. Epiphany Oxblood is dumping her girlfriend. A smooth, sombre tune arcs over the tragedy, the lullaby of Dying Petals, a gothic soap opera that’s swept London since its airing two years ago. Grand mansions, old money, gorgeous people, ominous omens, and sex. Lots of it. Epiphany’s now-ex, Canary Rouge, presses her face to her hand in anguish, beautifully blindsided.
