The Cayman Islands, comprised of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman, were uninhabited at the time of discovery by the Europeans, but it was the Carib word for marine crocodile (caimán) that gives the islands their name. England took possession of the Islands in 1670, eventually establishing a permanent settlement (slaves included, of course) in the 1730s. Long a haven for pirates, some might say the Islands continue to be, as an offshore financial haven for corporations and the wealthy.
