#Review: CMLL Viernes Espectacular 05/17/2019

Welcome to our CMLLViernes Espectacular review. This event features the rivalry between Kaho Kobayashi and Amapola. On May 31 they will face off in a hair vs hair match. Tonight’s fifth match will feature the rivalry between the leader of “Guerreros Laguneros” Ultimo Guerrero and the legend Mascara Año 2000. Cavernario vs Soberano Jr. Lightning Match

Who’s who? 

Cavernario is the one wearing a caveman singlet, while in blue and masked is Soberano Jr. 

Both are young(23/24) in 2014 Cavernario won both ‘To find and idol’ and Gran Alternativa while Soberano Jr. won both Junior Cup and Gran Alternativa. Cave is rudo here while Soberano Jr. is a tecnico. 

How’s the match?

Great, with the * that the ending is wonky and lopsided. My stream hit a bump at the end, but the ref Tirantes doesn’t really nail the 3 count. The ending seemed a little botched. Rewatching it back on Youtube the ending just was off. Awful end to what was a pretty good to great Lightning match.

These two are incredible when you consider neither man is 25 yet. If CMLL use these guys right they could become legends with the amount of mileage they still have. Cavernario has been doing good beating Rey Cometa in hair matches. Hopefully one of not both of these men are on CMLL Anniversary in some capacity. It would be a shame not to see a Soberano Jr. Corkscrew like the awesome one tonight. 

Dragon Lee, Niebla Roja, Mistico vs Gran Guerrero, El Terrible, Shocker

Who’s who?

Niebla Roja is living up to his name in red. Mistico/Dragon Lee are both in white, but Lee is in trunks while Mistico is in full pants.  

Rudo side only has 1 mask which is Gran. The older 2 maskless guys are El Terrible with long hair and black pants and Shocker with short blond hair and a black singlet.

Roja/Gran have a mask vs mask match set for CMLL Anniversary on the 16th of September. They are the focus here as they will be in matches vs on another until the big show. 

How’s the match?

Great! Probably the best bout to feature Gran/Roja so far in this feud. It still feels like people aren’t buying this feud as big enough for the Main Event anniversary show. Still, I think both guys had some pretty good offense here. They both looked credible and not just a one sided affair like most times they’ve faced off. Dragon Lee/are looking great, but that’s actually perplexing as it seems like Anniversary has nothing slated for the two. 

Último Guerrero, Volador Jr. and Diamante Azul vs Matt Taven, Michael Elgin  and Juice Robinson

Who’s who? 

On team Mexico we have Ultimo the unmasked shorter older Rudo in Black/White. Volador Jr. Younger maskless guy in a lime shirt and trunks. Lastly we have Azul in his blue mask and pants. 

On Team America we have Unbreakable Michael Elgin in red, Juice Robinson with brown dreads and last ROH’s Matt Taven in black and purple.

All 6 men are going to be in the International Gran Prix next Friday. So no single one is the focus, though Taven/Ultimo have played up their rivalry having met in RoH recently. 

How’s the match?

Great! Probably better than last week. It just helps to have a team of outsiders rather than 2 outsiders and Marco Corleone. I think it allowed the American’s to act more Rudo, not that Marco was playing nice last week. It just felt more free flowing this week. I also might like Elgin more than Marco... I also might like Ultimo more than Valiente. Especially in this case where it seems Taven was able to call back to bad blood with Ultimo... a history he doesn’t have with Valiente. 

Overall a great week in CMLL, but the Lucha Libre week isn’t over yet. Tomorrow night AAA will be streaming TripleMania 25 for free on their twitch channel. I will of course be covering that and can’t wait to see Dr. Wagner Jr. unmask Psycho Clown. Bien Bien Bien!

Highlights :

Rey Cometa, Johnny Idol and Guerrero Maya Jr vs Misterioso, Sagrado and Virus

Who’s who?

On team tecnico we have only 1 masked man. Guerrero Maya in a green/pink/black mask and matching pants. He is teaming with Johnny Idol who is the white guy in black trunks with long brown hair, while native Rey Cometa is in a blue top and pants.

Team rudo sees Sagrado with his regular black mask with a thick white cross on it, Misterioso in his regular green mask with pieces of cloth hanging over his neck and the oldest man of the group Virus with his face half painted. 

How’s the match?

Good! Really good for it’s position on the card. I find myself turning around on Cometa who has been booked better in recent weeks. I don’t know if CMLL is shining on him enough to give him gold anytime soon, but hopefully he won’t lose his hair anytime soon. Guerrero has yet to be disappointing in a bout to me. Idol is showing improvement, but has a very unflattering look. Team rudo is comprised of 3 guys I like decently enough, but right now seem to fit comfortably in the midcard. I’m honestly a little disappointed we didn’t see Misterioso steal a mask, unless I missed that. 

Puma vs Drone, Lightning Match

Who’s who?

Puma is in a yellow bodysuit/mask with face paint while drone is in red/blue/white attire and mask. 

How’s the match?

Good, I’m a very big fan of both men. Drone really knows how to use his highflying offense and Puma is perhaps one of the best Lucha bases in the business atm. I hope Drone gets a good story soon, I think these two had a lightening matches a few weeks ago. While I don’t mind seeing them clash again Drone as the winner of the bouts would hopefully have something interesting come his way. 

Titan, Caristico and Blue Panther vs Pierroth, Luciferno  and Mr. Niebla

Who’s who?

Caristico is in all white and lucky not paired with Mistico who later in the night was wearing pretty much the same thing. With him is Blue Panther with his shaved head from his hair vs hair bout on the 4th and Titan who is in light Blue mask and pants. 

On team Rudo we have maskless Pierroth, Luciferno who is in a shirt with his name on it, but is also wearing a blue mask and their 3rd Mr. Niebla the gross man wearing black mask and pants. 

How’s the match?

Pretty skippable, The match wasn’t awful. It just felt very much like Titan did his silly chop bit and Caristico did his nice corner armdrag spot. Other than those two spots the rest seemed pretty forgettable. I like the talent involved, it just felt very much like filler before the main event. 

Mistico, Valiente and Rush vs Ultimo Guerrero, Negro Casas and Cavernario 

Who’s who?

Mistico is in all white mask and pants, Rush is in a pinstripe shirt and western boots while their 3rd Valiente is in green briefs and green/silver mask.

Team rudo are all maskless. Ultimo in green/black, Negro in black briefs as usual while Cavernario is in a loincloth like singlet and warpaint.

How’s the match?

Good, though the ending like many Guerrero endings as of late is short via shenanigans which hurts the match over all. The match is worth checking out though as it seems that Mistico is just as annoyed with Ultimo’s cheating as we are. He called Ultimo out for one on one which is always exciting this close to CMLL Anniversary, though the card was to be announced tomorrow so, it seems unlikely it will play into that events card. Which is a little sad because Mistico vs Ultimo at CMLL anniversary would be a great match up! Oh well.
