Wolf Alice played a storming headline set at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire last week. Braden Fletcher was on hand to take photos of one of our favourite members of the Class of 2015. Wolf Alice’s debut album My Love Is Cool is out on 22nd June.
Colour Me Wednesday’s melodic power-pop-punk debut I Thought It Was Morning was overlooked in 2013, maybe due to the admittedly poor mastering. Thankfully, in a live setting, they rip through the songs with power and panache, showcasing their individual talents as singer Harriet Doveton even makes way for a few ripping guitar solos. The songs are bouncy, witty, and occasionally vicious, their grrrl politics ripping into “bitter boys” who will “probably get more radio play than me” and young Tories who “have no real friends”.
A change of clothes and Harriet Doveton is now roaring through the songs of The Tuts. While similar to Colour Me Wednesday, they play harder and feistier, a more cheeky edge to them. Before long, Nadia Javed has jumped into the rambunctious crowd, guitar in hand.
Over the past fifteen years, Washington, D.C. resident Spoonboy has become somewhat of a DIY legend, be it solo or with his great band The Max Levine Ensemble. Tonight - the first night of his “farewell” UK tour - he’s stripped off the punchy backing band that has decorated his later recordings. This brings forward the powerful heart that’s bare and open in all of his songs. His guitar tones would be reminiscent of Billy Bragg if his vocals didn’t tremble. Even so, he is defiant in his vulnerability. He talks about how his songs are about subverting are rebelling against patriarchal masculinity, and then laments in "Stab Yer Dad" about and how “if our fathers were our role models for god and they failed us, what does that tell us about our supposed omnipotent savior?” The bare nature of the set allows the often hook-laden songs to stick in your mind, to haunt you and to cherish you even when no one else will. Spoonboy is a gift. Catch him before he’s gone.
