Latin Project - Catullus 70
In Catullus’ Carmen 70, he explains the words his lover has said to him and her promise to never leave his side.
“Nulli se dicit mulier mea nubere malle
quam mihi, non si se Iuppiter ipse petat.”
“My woman says to me that there is none
With whom she’d rather spend her days than I”
However, he goes on to say that women often lie, implying that should a better man come along, Lesbia might leave him.
“dicit: sed mulier cupido quod dicit amanti,”
“So she says, but women often lie,
What a woman says to a desirous lover,”
Similarly, in Rihanna’s song, Unfaithful, she talks about her own affair; telling her boyfriend that she loves him but even though “this is more than love
//The reason that the sky is blue,” she still can’t be faithful to him because she is “happy with some other guy,”
In Catullus’ poem, he knows the possibility that Lesbia could be lying to him or that her love isn’t strong while in Rihanna’s song, she is the woman lying while her boyfriend is like Catullus: wary of loosing his lover to another man.
