My teacher recommended me a bible website, and it's the coolest thing ever

Basically, it's called Catena, and the gist is that for every verse of the bible you can click on it and see commentary from TONS of scholars across the centuries

the funniest part is that it's formatted like a comment section so it looks like all these massive scholars all got together and commented on the bible

which they did (communion of saints my beloved)

BUT ANYWAYS yeah I just felt that this should be shared with you all :)

Woke up this morning thinking about this scene:

“He’s made of wood too. Why do they like him, and not me?”

and how it’s such a subtle and masterful callout of the Catholics who don’t even seem to realize that they’re failing one of the most basic tenets of their faith. Like yeah, speaking as an insider, one of the most common failings of people who claim to be Catholic is that they think they’re immune to or above certain human behaviors, but in actuality they’re just as capable of pride and hatred as the people who crucified Jesus were. It’s so easy to get caught up in a sense of moral superiority that it can make you entirely blind to the whole point of Christianity--humility and unconditional love. And that kind of thing is what makes outsiders think that it’s our faith that’s the problem, when it’s actually our failure to live out that faith that hurts people. And Del Toro manages to capture that entire discussion in just a few scenes and a handful of words without ever coming across as spiteful or angry and HAVE I MENTIONED THAT THIS MOVIE IS VERY GOOD? HAVE YOU PICKED UP ON THAT YET?!

I admit, I've been very disappointed in the U.S. Catholic Church in the last few years. These past months especially. So much so that I've stopped going to mass because I just cannot trust anyone who supports our current 'leader.' But I think today was the final nail in tRump's coffin when it comes to the Church and I hope most true Christians. I can only pray that people I once called friends have finally seen the light.

You guys. You don’t understand. I just watched this miniseries, it’s only 4 episodes. But you have no idea what you are missing.

WHY HAVEN’T ANYONE WATCHED THIS

Sam is a priest. We have priest Lestat guys. There are witchy nuns. I repeat, WITCHY NUNS. He almost dies several times, but somehow he’s always surviving lol He wears a cassock. Yes, I’m talking to you Midnight Mass-ITWV people. Hot priest wearing a cassock. ALERT, ALERT. He’s also wearing very few clothes in lots of the scenes. Do whatever you wish with this information.

Does it have heavy themes as abuse, racism, church doing bad things? Yes. It does, but the stories of the characters are really good. Priest Sam has a sister in it and she’s freaking badass. We love Frankie in this house ❤️

You might not like the religious aspect of it (they are, in the end, Catholic nuns so you know, they are faithful to God and all of that). But trust me, you’re in for a treat if you like Catholics being naughty (in every sense), hot priests, women bonding and, of course Sam Reid - who is, by the way, phenomenal. Not that we didn’t know already that he’s an amazing actor, but seeing him doing other characters just as well as he does Lestat only proves the point that he is, indeed, THAT GOOD.

So yeah. Go watch it. After that, go write some fics. Post the fics. Let me know when you post the fics. Thank you.

Something all countries whose cultures are deeply shaped by Catholicism have in common is that, culturally, they’re dramatic as hell. And then you think about it and go, how could they not be melodramatic cultures when basically all their lore is based on the Passion of Christ and gore-filled imagery of people crying, suffering, or being tortured? And the religious representatives are literally people with one ornamental outfit for every thematic service, divided and understood by colors, not to mention when they have to choose a new pope, they literally lock themselves in a fortified room while gossiping and scheming the end of the world. It’s a full-on drag show. Catholicism is incredible. And the worst part is, I genuinely think the only ones who can understand it on a high-level are the Spanish and the Italians. Those two cultures and Catholicism are literally one.
