Last Chance: William Pope.L at Catherine Bastide
Catherine Bastide gallery in Brussels currently has a solo exhibition on view of works by the New Jersey-based artist William Pope.L. The show consists of five large-scale paintings, as well as twenty-five smaller works. The smaller works are part of a series that Pope.L began in 1997 titled "The Skin Set Project." The paintings feature declarative sentences riffing for example on racist affirmations about black people (“Black People Are The Root Of All Evil”) and continues today with various other colors assigned to people and absurd, poetic sentences that are intelligible yet not reducible to a simplistic meaning.
William Pope.L's work has been exhibited or performed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Whitney Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the New Museum in New York, and the Renaissance Society in Chicago.>
This exhibition, titled Gold People Shit in their Valet, will be on view at Catherine Bastide until October 18th.
