i remember when i held those same hella reductionist racist views towards rap
i remember when i learned it was as much spoken word poetry as it was a music genre and i remember how things shifted in my heart
how even after growing that respect for the genre i still held a dumb belief in my heart that i didn't like it.
i remember the way i didn't think about the pop/white rappers I've listened to and enjoyed. nor the bands and songs i love whose genre isn't rap but have rap woven into them. I had been giving them a fair shot, but not actual black rappers - at least nowhere near the same frequency.
I've since worked towards exposing myself to different rap as much as any other genre. And like any other genre there's tropes and beats that are subjectively likeable or unlikeable for me.
