Monday was my final day at work before I said goodbye to Kent for the forseeable future. I was ready to leave Kent but I found I had to force myself to leave work for the last time. Given that most people can't leave work quick enough, I realise how odd that sounds but I sincerely loved my job and place of work. As previously mentioned, I was working at Catching Lives (www.catchinglives.org), a small independent charity operating as a day centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. So far in my life I've travelled to 4 continents, 17 countries and I've been in the Amazon Rainforest (always the top item on my bucket list) yet Catching Lives sits up there as one of my favourite places. In my years there I've experienced a myriad of positive human qualities, ranging from the dedication of selfless staff and volunteers to the generosity of complete strangers. It's a place of love, hope, smiles, support, optimism and firm belief that things can and will get better. All of this occurs alongside people who are hitting their rock bottom, which along with homelessness might include relationship breakdowns, addiction, mental and/or physical health problems, financial struggles, desertion, depression, fear, and isolation, to name a few. I think it's this that gives those people who walk through the day centre's door hope; seeing that while their world is crashing down around them there are people here who are choosing to spend their free time trying to help these strangers out of nothing but compassion and a desire to do something good for someone else. It's this that inspires me and put a smile on my face every day that I went home from work or volunteering. Saying goodbye was hard, but it's a place that has given me so much faith in humanity, it's earned itself a little spot in my heart. P.S...10 days to go!
