stella found herself down at the farm more days than not - her brother relished in the georgia heat, working on the fields to provide food for the small town they’d settled in before most of the others. he said it reminded him of cuba, which sounded insane to stella - the humidity was missing, the sweat that coated her sticky and unpleasant, but he was doing his part in the community without complaint.
they were lucky, and they knew it. there were too many who had already passed - too many they knew had passed - so stella came to visit him when she could, instead of her brother, however, she ran into michael - a single father who’d recently arrived, and she decided to see how he was settling in.
“good afternoon,” she greeted politely, holding onto her small picnic basket with a lunch meant for her brother. “how are you settling in so far?”
