ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions), now known as AAP (Australian Antarctic Program) is the name of the government funded scientific research conducted in and of south polar regions, established in 1947. Since then, research has been conducted at Macquarie Island and Heard Island with antarctic bases at Casey Station, Mawson Station, Wilkes Station, and Davis Station. The Wilkes Station was abandoned in 1969 due to environmental difficulties.
