Transport Fire from One Location to Another:
In the Old Testament Bible account of Abraham and Isaac, it reads "Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife." (Genesis 22:6) It was not a simple thing to start a fire in ancient times. People would have found it easier, where possible, to get a hot ember from their neighbors rather than try to start a fire on their own. A number of scholars believe that what Abraham carried was a vessel — perhaps a pot suspended from a chain — that contained live coals or charcoal embers raked from the preceding night's fire (Isaiah 30:14). Glowing embers transported in such a way could readily be used with tinder wood to rekindle a fire at any point along a journey. If matches or other man-made fire-starters are not available, starting a fire with friction and natural materials is quite difficult. So, once a fire going, it's not "disposable" but rather something to "recycle", if possible. The goal with fire carrying is to allow a preexistent ember to potentially last for hours on the journey from one place to another. Practicing methods beforehand will help refine the process and provide an idea of how long the ember will last. Here are some ideas for transporting coals (fire) from one place to another to save time starting a fire each time and avoiding wet conditions that reduce the chances of starting a fire from scratch. Fungus Fire Carry 1: Find bracket fungi – a type of hard fungus that grows on tree trunks. 2: Break off a chunk, hold it to an ember until it begins to smolder, then loosely wrap in moss to carry. Ember Box 1: Gather charcoal, moss, and a ventilated container like a tin can or even a seashell. 2: Line the bottom of the container with moss, then add charcoal, and an ember. Cover with moss and close the container. Ember Bundle 1: Gather thin twigs, dry leaves, and other tinder, as well as strips of bark and moss. 2: Place an ember in the dry material and then wrap it tightly in the bark and moss like a cigar.
