 Steve and Bucky are together up until they're eighteen and then the depression hits them hard, and so Steve gets sicker and Bucky gets weary and they've been overhear so long they both think it's just the stress getting to them and so Bucky thinks that maybe, maybe Steve is his soulmate it'll just take a couple years to see if they've aged at all 

Except he gets shipped over seas and Steve's given the serum which slows his aging down so you couldn't even tell anymore and so Bucky realized Steve hasn't changed at all but

But he has. And so Bucky starts to wonder if he already found his soulmate, that it isn't, couldn’t be Steve, which nearly kills him because that's not fair - he's too in love with Steve for it to ever be fair to his soulmate

and so bucky starts taking measures to make sure steve doesn't notice he’s aging because he doesn't think he can stomach the idea of steve ever telling him to be with someone who isn’t him

the gist of the story is that bucky falls thinking that even though he’s head over heels for steve, steve isn’t his soulmate, and steve watches bucky fall and wonders why bucky wasn’t the one

but then when steve wakes up and the shit with the winter soldier happens, natasha points out that steve’s body is aging, just not like it’s supposed - to it’s still recycling cells, the serum is just keeping the cells healthy and he probably was aging before the serum too, that it wasn’t his sicknesses making him look older
