Stanley had never done it before.Â
He talked big, boasted to his friends as if he had, but heâd never actually participated in the act. So when he asks you to be his first, he doesnât think much of it, because the lie is there to protect him, even if you knew him like the back of your hand.Â
âItâs likeââ Stanley thinks for a moment, snapping his fingers as he actively recollects his memory. âA parting gift. You know, before soldiers are shipped off to war.âÂ
âOkay,â you make a sound thatâs in between a scoff and a laugh. âWhat makes you think Iâm entitled to give you my first time?âÂ
âBecause you love me.â Something about the way he responds, like heâs so sure thatâs reasoning enough, irks you to your core. âAnd I love you. Weâre not strangers, we wonât be awkward, itâll be fun. Something good to remember me by.â He winks at the end of his explanation, again, as if that was enough to get you to agree.Â

The Mornings We Made Synopsis: The quiet joys and unexpected warmth of a life he never thought heâd have but now canât imagine losing. CW: SFW, Family-friendly/Cozy, Domestic, Food prep, Old Celtic Tradition, Father-daughter, Family bonding Word Count: 1,261
Disclaimer: The following is a work of fan fiction. It does not reflect the official story, character relationships, or views of the creators of Vinland Saga.
*"cariad" is a Welsh noun that means love*
Before dawn, the house lay steeped in blue-grey quiet. Frost clung to the small windowpanes, tracing white veins across the glass. The wind pressed softly against the thin daub walls.
A faint creak of a floorboard tip toed closer,
âDaâŠ?â
The whisper was tiny. A small hand, clumsy with sleep and excitement, patted blindly at his shoulder.
Askeladd inhaled sharply. Not startled. Just instantly awake, the way a man becomes when a lifetime has taught him never to sleep too deeply.
He rolled his head on the pillow, eyes narrowing out of habit before softening when he saw her.
His daughter stood shivering beside the bed, wrapped in a wool shawl that dragged behind her like a cape. Wild curls framed her flushed cheeks. Her toes curled on the cold floorboards, puffing tiny white breaths into the dim room.
âItâs Calan Gaeaf,â she breathed, leaning in until her tiny nose nearly brushed his. Her grin trembled with excitement. âItâs today.â
He exhaled a quiet huff of laughter, a ghost of amusement tugging at the edges of his rugged face.
âAye,â he murmured, voice low and rough with sleep. âThough the sunâs not even awake yet.â
She bounced once â a little hop that sent the shawl sliding off her narrow shoulders.
âBut the spirits are,â she whispered, eyes huge.
A smirk tugged at his mouth. He reached out, scooping her up effortlessly and guiding her onto the bed so her bare feet wouldnât suffer the floor.
âSpirits donât like noisy children,â he warned in a playful whisper, tapping the tip of her nose. âTheyâll think youâre tryinâ to scare âem off.â
She slapped both hands over her mouth to trap her laughter.
âCan we wake Mama?â she asked, muffled.
He shifted just enough to look at you.
Curled beneath the furs, soft and warm. Cheek pressed to the pillow. Hair spilling across your back like silk. Peace resting gently over your features.
A faint smile tugged at his lips; something unguarded flickered in his eyes â something heâd show to no one but the two of you.
âNo,â he said softly. âLetâs let her rest. She deserves it.â
He rose from the bed with quiet ease, his daughter scrambling into his arms again before he padded into the main room. The cold greeted them at once â a crisp bite to the air.
She tucked her face into the warm space beneath his jaw.
âCold mornings build strong bones,â he murmured, rubbing her back. âBesides⊠It makes the fire sweeter.â
He set her down beside the hearth and crouched, raking the coals with a poker. Sparks flitted upward like tiny glowing insects. His daughter watched in breathless fascination.
âDa, can I add the twigs?â she asked, crawling towards the sack of sticks sheâd collected last night.
âSlowly,â he said. âLet them catch, not smother.â
She bent forward with exaggerated care, dropping them one by one. Askeladd kept a steadying hand to her chest, shielding her from leaning too close to the heat.
The fire stirred, stretching into life. Orange light spilled into the room, softening the shadows.
âYou see?â he murmured. âEven small things make a difference if you place them right.â
She beamed, warming her hands, bouncing lightly on her toes.
â
They lingered by the hearth as the warmth grew. He gently detangled her curls with slow fingertips while she whispered half-awake observations about the neighbor children and who might already be up.
Then her hand snagged the hem of his tunic.
âCan we make Mamaâs porridge now?â
He raised a brow.
âAlready plotting to steal my duties, are you?â
She giggled and clung tighter as he stood â her little feet stepping onto his, riding along as he waddled them into the kitchen.
â
The kitchen filled with soft domestic sounds: the scrape of a wooden spoon, gentle bubbling of water, the deep timbre of his quiet hums as they worked together.
She stood on a low stool, stirring with all the solemn concentration in the world, tongue peeking at the corner of her mouth. He braced the bowl with a steady hand.
âYouâre too excited to sit still,â he teased.
âItâs the spirits,â she whispered with a seriousness reserved only for children. âThey woke me today.â
He paused, not worried, just thoughtful. His Welsh blood carried stories as old as the hills themselves. He was glad this, too, lived in her.
âAye,â he said with a soft smile. âThey walk close today. Which is why we honor them. And keep warm by the fire.â
She sprinkled berries with far too much enthusiasm, a few bounced off the rim â which he caught in his hand with impressive reflexes, tossing one into the air and catching it neatly in his mouth.
She gasped, delighted, and threw another for him to catch â it bounced off his chin and disappeared in his beard.
She burst into giggles.
He pressed a dramatic hand to his chest, feigning grave injury, then plucked the lost berry from his beard and popped it into his mouth with a wink.
âCome now,â he said, brushing her cheek with his thumb to wipe a smear of honey. âBefore your mother thinks we burned the place down.â
She hugged his side with all her little strength, the stool wobbling dangerously; he caught her with one arm and set her gently onto the floor. Her small hand immediately sought his, swallowed completely by his large one. He brushed his thumb over her knuckles instinctively.
And he carried the warm bowl down the hall while she skipped behind, trying to step exactly where he stepped, mimicking his long strides with quick little ones.
â
They crept back into the bedroom â but your eyes were already blinking open, stirred by warmth and the smell of honey.
Your daughter squealed and launched herself into the bed.
âMama! Mama! We made breakfast!â
You sat up, brushing your hair back, smiling warmly. He knelt beside you, one knee sinking into the furs, holding out the bowl with a steady hand braced near your hip.
âHappy Calan Gaeaf, cariad.â He leaned in and kissed your temple.
â
After breakfast, the three of you dressed warmly â wool cloaks, fur-lined shawls, dried herbs tied into your daughterâs belt to ward off bad spirits. He fastened a rowan-wood charm around her neck, the one youâd carved together the night before.
When you stepped outside, breath puffing white, you noticed something beside the door:
A woven basket. Heavy. Decorated in evergreen, holly berries, scraps of dyed cloth. Linen-wrapped parcels. Carved figures. Herbs. Dried apples threaded on string.
Your daughter gasped, hands flying to her cheeks.
âMam! Da! Look! The spirits brought gifts!â
He raised a brow, feigning mild surprise, but you could see the faintest flicker of pride at the corner of his mouth.
âAh, it seems the ancestors favored us this year,â he said, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
Your daughter knelt in the snow, touching each gift with reverence, whispering awe-filled things under her breath.
You slipped an arm around his waist, narrowing your eyes at him with playful accusation. He wrapped his cloak around you without thinking, drawing you into his warmth.
âLucius,â you murmured into his chest, âyou did this.â
His hand slid up your back, slow and steady.
âFor you and her?â he whispered. âThereâs nothing I wouldnât do.â
He kissed your forehead â lips lingering, soft as falling snow.
Your daughterâs laughter rang across the frost-bright morning, clear as a bell. The wind still bit at your cheeks, but as he held you close, the world softened, warm by the small family youâd built together.

Scarf - 1140 words - suggestive ending - @wolfstarmicrofic
âHello everybody. Today I will be giving my presentation about âwhy I even like Remusâ. Made by me.â
Remus, the only audience, sighed. âYou were the one insisting on doing it. Iâve told you many times you donât have to do it, why are you making fun of it?â
Sirius just grinned apologetically. âSorry Moony. I promise to keep it serious from now on.â
Remus hated he couldnât help the soft smile when Sirius burst out in laughter seconds later.
However, he hid it fast and rolled his eyes dutifully. Sirius got himself together, clicking to the next slide. A picture appeared of Remus on their couch, book in his hands and nestled under a blanket.
âReason one. Youâre too fucking cute. Look at your soft smile here.â Of course a zoomed in picture appeared. Remus raised his knees to hide his face, but apparently that only proved Siriusâ point. âSee! Iâm getting cuteness aggression from just watching you.â
The next slide had a picture of Remus bundled up in a beanie to his eyes and a scarf so high his red nose poked out. He remembered that day. It was the first day with snow and Sirius had insisted on going sleighing. He had looked ethereal with the snowflakes in his hair and flushed cheeks.Â
âAnd youâre so pretty!â Sirius exclaimed to his surprise.
Remus couldnât help the frown. âStop,â Sirius commanded. âYou are. You see these snowflakes on your eyelashes? Your curls from under the beanie? Your fucking doe eyes? â
A next picture. Remus was laughing with Lily. âMoony, you have sparkles in them when youâre happy. Honestly. And everytime Iâm talking to you and you start smiling with your damn dimple and sparkly eyes my heart jumps.â
Remus felt weird. Of course he had these feelings for Sirius, and he figured Sirius must like him to some extent after a year of being boyfriends, but somehow he has always been insecure about him feeling more intensely. He felt a little bad for that, but couldnât help it. And now Sirius was describing all of it so sincerelyâŠ
âThatâs really sweet, cariad.â He got up to give his love a kiss, but was shoved down to the couch again. âIâm not even halfway!â
Remus was quite sure he would be crying at the end of this.
âBecause you know what they say, the inside is more important than the outside and you have so so much inside. This?â Remus didnât understand what Sirius was aiming at when his lasagna (Hopeâs recipe) appeared. Then a soup. Chicken. Poke bowl.Â
âThatâs just dinner?â he questioned.
The next picture was of Remus slicing something in the kitchen, clearly taken from their living room. âDinner you made. Because you know I like it. Because you were free. When youâre done later but know I had an intense day and cook anyway.â
He had never thought of that, it just seemed natural. Sirius did the same. But maybe that also is a form of love Remus never realised.
âAlso, when youâre invested in something? Hot. Your concentrated frown while writing. Or explaining. Or- the best.. when I manage to get you competitive. I just love seeing you passionate. Also I donât have pictures but I love your hugs. Or the way you remember everything I tell you.â
An aggressive click. âYou make sure to buy me flowers every week because I once mentioned in second grade how I hate the weird statis charm they were in in my old home.â A collage of flowerbouquets was on the screen.
Remus could do nothing else then just try to process all this. He had felt like he did the bare minimum (also had always felt like he looked bare minimum). However, somehow Sirius got him feeling like it was not. He jumped up.Â
âI need a hug,â he stated. Sirius probably had somehow even more slides, but he needed to show his love and gratitude. So he pulled his love as close as possible, whispering thank you and amazing and i love you and more.
Sirius shushed him, arms tightening in the way he knew Remus preferred.
âThe other slides donât have pictures anyways, soâŠâ He tilted Remusâ head up to press a soft kiss on his eyebrow, nose bridge, cheek, all along the scar running there. âI know you donât like these,â a kiss on the white line on his chin, âbut I want you to know I like you with them. Not despite them. They tell your story, how strong you are, how you became the way you are now.â
Two hands slid lower while Remus was blinking away his tears. Sirius frowned. âYou need to let it out, mon trĂ©sure?â Softly, Sirius kissed a stray tear away. Remus smiled wobbly and gave Sirius the go ahead.
He could have guessed his boyfriend would end his presentation with the reason their whole relationship had somehow started.Â
The hands slipped under his shirt. âAlso, they look really, really sexy. Especially in the color hue of our bedchamber.â Remus was not ready to unpack that sentence. âI want to lick them every time I see them.â He hid his face in embarrassment, feeling his ears color even more because of the hand slipping softly through the strands now.
Sirius chuckled lovingly. âNow these are the most objective but I had to name them. I absolutely love our dynamic in bed. I would choose to never have sex anymore when it meant staying with you, but youâre a literal angel sent down to earth. Youâre everything I need to just wind down and enjoy. Sweet enough to never make me uncomfortable but demanding enough to make me able to give up control. And meanwhile and after you take such good care of me.â Remus had never, never expected an analysis of their sex life when they started this, but it gave him a huge confidence boost to hear how much he was doing good.
âAlso, last but absolutely not least. I canât believe you want to try every single thing out with me. Every unhinged may-be-kink I name, you agree. And now weâve found out some amazing new things and- Moony who buys their boyfriend bloody ears for fifty galleons?!â
Remus was absolutely sure he was redder than his schooltie had ever been. Speechless, he tilted his head in an invite Sirius graciously took. The kiss was full of everything he was sure of he could never muster to say. The trust, love, thankfulness, wonder and everything in between. As always, it was returned with just the same passion.
After a while, Sirius leaned back a little. âIf I hear you say something even slightly incriminating about yourself the coming month, I will come for you,â he declared with a grin.
Remus just kissed him again.

summary: its been a year since youâve seen everyone, but fate seems to have brought you back
warnings: smoking, drinking, fluff
an: Daeges is a traditional spelling of the name Daisy đ; cariad is welsh for love/lover/beloved one
Time is a funny thing. The way experiences and events shape and reshape who you are as a person was always something you found fascinating.
How a person could be one way for so many years and then one seemingly little event in the grand scheme of life turns everything upside down.
Your life after secondary school seemed so far away. It was the end of second term in your first year at university, yet it felt like two lifetimes had happened since leaving what you once knew.
You had new interests, new motivations, new friends. Not for any horrible or traumatic reason; you just..grew apart from everything. Everyone.
At least thatâs what you had thought. Daeges, your roommate, had been persistently pestering you to go out with her.
âJust one pub, please. I want you to meet the girl I've been talking to. I need to know if you approve, please, please, please,â signature pout was on overtime, puppy dog eyes in attendance as well.
How could you say no to her when sheâd done so much for you.
âFine,â you huffed, agreeing to just one pub. One drink even, but that was it.
It was only on the walk from your flat to said pub did Daeges inform you that this girl she had been falling for was bringing a few friends of her own.
For the life of you, you couldnât remember the girl's name either. Mar something? Marissa? Martha?
âMarlene!â Daeges shouted above the crowd after you entered through the heavy wooden pub door.
Goosebumps flushed over your arms at her exclamation, thankfully hidden by the cropped leather jacket you opted for on the cool summer night. You hadnât heard that name in a while, it had to be coincidence.
Daeges pulled you through the crowd, your nerves rising as you waited to meet the guest of honor for the night. Once broken through the crowd, Daeges quickly wrapped her arms around Marlene.
It wasnât a coincidence.
Her hair was a little longer now, a shaggy cut with a color streak or two. Very little guessing on your part of who contributed to that if the group was any bit the same as you left them.
You chose to stare at your feet while they greeted each other. Marleneâs voice carrying that same excited tone youâve heard so many times before.
When they finally pulled away you heard your name falling in shocked tones from Marleneâs lips, âHoly shit, is it really you?â
Shy eyes meet her stunned expression before you give a timid smile, âItâs really me. Long time no see, huh, Marls?â
In an instant youâre in a bone crushing embrace, âIâll bloody fucking say so, babes.â
Daeges was thoroughly, and rightfully, confused, âSozz, Iâm playing catch up here. You two know each other? From where? How long? How did I miss this?â
You scratched the back of your neck, your tell of bashfulness, âWe went to secondary together.â
âAnd primary!â Marlene interrupted, âKnownâem since we were eleven! Little tots, us and the rest. Oh theyâre going to freak when they see you. I was just picking up drinks for us all now.â
Your roommate crossed her arms, âWhy did you not tell me sooner?â
You huffed with a shrug, âYou call her Mar! That could be short for anything. We havenât talked since we graduated, went to different Unis before I transferred. We lost touch and I just..â
âJust never reached out is what you did, you fucker. Siri thought he saw you across the lawn one day but James was certain he was just hallucinating. The shit heâs gonna give knowing he was right..â Marlene grabbed the tray of drinks, you and Daeges following close behind with your own.
Youâd had hoped your falling behind would go unnoticed, maybe the excitement of meeting Marleneâs new girl would be a distraction.
Daeges, however, caught on, âOh, no you donât,â she hooked her elbow with yours, âIâm officially the only stranger in the group.â
âIâm basically a stranger,â you scoffed, âItâs been over a year since Iâve spoken to any of them. Didnât even tell them I transferred hereâŠfugginâ hell theyâre gonna murder me. Thisâll be a breeze for you.â That made Daeges smile..smirk more like it.
The drinks were a good enough distraction that you went unnoticed. That and the fawning over Marleneâs new love interest made it easy for you to blend into the background.
But like a dog to a bone, you swear Sirius could smell you, âIs that who I think it is?â
Like a treacherous traitor, Daeges stepped aside, pushing you in front of her, âOh you mean your apparent long lost friend? Please, have atâem.â
A quietly mumbled (and playful) I hate you slipped from the side of your mouth as a chorus of cheerful calls of your nickname peppered the air.
As history would attest, Sirius was still the loudest of the bunch, âSee, Prongs! I fucking told you I saw themâŠI deserve a shot or something.â
James rolled his eyes with broadway exaggeration, âOh please, Pads. Donât use that as a bloody excuse just go get a round.â
Sirius gave a dazzling smile, placing a kiss to your temple in greeting before heading to the bar.
Attention turned back to you, James arms opened wide, âAlright, câmereâŠI donât care how long itâs been I'm still a hugger.â
Daeges watched in amusement as James gave you a squeeze. You allowed yourself to be squeezed, too, knowing all too well the repercussions of resistance when it came to your old curly haired friend.
âYou know theyâre hating this,â Daeges whispered to Marlene, sinking further into her side. Marlene only smiled, âYou havenât seen the best part.â
Once finally released from his hold, James stepped aside and you felt immediate heat spread over your cheeks. You hoped and prayed the dim lights of the pub made it less noticeable.
He somehow looked even better than you remembered, sharp cheekbones and soft lips; a new scar ran over the left side of his top lip.
âStill getting into trouble, Moony?â Your tone was light, cautious with your teasing.
Remusâs smile grew, âYou know me, cariad..â Your heart raced at the old pet name youâd nearly forgotten.
Thankfully, Sirius came back with a tray of shots; a welcome distraction from your racing thoughts.
Daeges fit in perfectly, you had no doubt that she would. She and Marlene were cute together.
The group started sharing stories, mostly old pranks and other shenanigans you all used to get up to while at school.
âGods, you shouldâve seen these two in action, Daise,â James slung an arm over your and Marleneâs shoulders, âMoony and Padfoot would start chasing each other in an argument and no one was quicker at rounding them up and putting them in their place. It was impressive work.â
Daeges turned to look at you, eyebrows raised. You simply shrugged your shoulders before downing your gin and tonic, feigning ignorance.
A few more stories were told from this past year, ones that didnât involve you. It made you happy to hear they were all nearly the same people, but somewhat sad at the same time.
Emotion must have been written on your face, Remus tapping your shoulder. You looked over, seeing him motion his first two fingers to his lips. You nodded immediately, following Remus to the back patio of the pub.
He found you both a quiet corner before pulling two cigarettes from his shirt pocket. He lit his own first, ignoring your open hand asking for his lighter.
Instead he grabbed either side of your face, leaning forward to touch the tip of his cigarette to yours.
You inhaled to help it light and once it did, Remus leaned back, blowing smoke into the air, âAtta, babe. Was worried you mightâve forgotten that trick.â
Ignoring the obvious blush rushing down your neck you shook your head, âDonât, Rem.â
Remus chucked slightly, âDonât what? Praise you? I thought you liked that.â
He crossed his arms before taking another drag and playfully wiggling his eyebrows.
You bit your lip to hide your smirk, âYou donât..you donât know me. Not anymore. Iâm not the same person that left school with you guys.â
Remus shrugged, âThatâs okay. Iâll just get to know you again.â
You scoffed, âOh really?â Your arms were the ones crossed now, âItâs just that simple for you?â
He laughed lightly with a shake of his head, âIâm no fool, cariad. I know nothing is simple with you.â
You gave him a playful shove, causing a boyish giggle to leave his lips, âHey, okay, I just meant youâre stubborn!â
You pushed him again, âThatâs not any better, Rem!â
The sound of the pubâs back door signaled the appearance of both Sirius and Marlene.
When given a questioned look, Marlene shook her head, speaking around the cigarette she was currently lighting, âDonât worry I didnât leave her alone with James.â
âLilly showed up,â Sirius added. You nodded in understanding, knowing your friend had the perfect buffer for Jamesâs positively joyful rambling.
After a long drag, Sirius spoke again, âBit cross we havenât properly ran into each other since your transfer. Been far too long since Iâve seen that dopey smile on our Moonyâs face but fifteen alone with you..â
âPadfoot..â Remus warned, and dark and broody in both tone and posture.
Classically, Sirius ignored him, âWoof.. back and dopier than ever.â
With that, Remus lunged for Sirius, the shorter boy yelping, taking a long drag, then throwing his cigarette into the night before hustling into the pub, Remus hot on his tail.
âWe wouldâve smoked that, you know!â Marlene called after them before settling back against the wall next to you, shaking her head. âHeâs talked about you a few times, actually. Siriâs not just fucking with you.â
Warmth spread in your chest, âYeah?â
She nodded, âComes out more when heâs a little buzzed, those protective barriers of his a little easier to push throughâŠbut yeah. We all miss you.â
The back door swung open once more, this time revealing a mop of curls and a slightly out of breath James, âMarls, we need ya..Moony and Pads there..â Marlene waved her hand in his general direction.
She threw the stub or her cigarette to the ground before crushing it with the toe of her boot.
She turned to you with a grin, nodding towards the door, âYou wanna team up? For old times sake?â
You gave a playful huff of a sigh, âFineâŠIâll take Remus.â
Marlene snorted, âYeah, I bet you will.â
