DD2000 - Plan
The role that I have chosen to research into is that of Character and Creature artists within games as well as other artistic mediums. As a main focus I will research into 3D Creature Art as that personally interests me more than any other art that I have created. Although, for me to secure a Creature/Character artist job, I will need to have a thorough understanding of Human and Animal anatomy. I have been advised countless times that learning anatomy will both help me in finding a job in the future, but also improve my skills greatly in 3D modelling creatures.
What I will research first will be 3D character artists that I already have some knowledge on as well as looking up character artists on Artstation. I will research into these Artists to see what company they work within and also what I could learn from their art. Next I will then research companies that I have an interest in joining in. This could be the interest that I have for the art is created in the company or whether I enjoy the games that the company creates. For me, I would prefer to work in a company that has a culture that I agree with as well as 3D art that I would consider enjoyable to create.
I can attempt to contact different 3D character artists in all different ranges of companies to learn more about their job, the pipeline to making 3D characters and also the culture of the company itself if I am interested in working at said company.
Moreover, I can research what responsibilities I will have in the job so that I know what kind of workload I will be given on a day-to-day basis. For example, within an Indie industry I could have a much larger workload as a character artist due to lack of staff. However, within a AAA company they could have a job to specifically Rig characters or even specifically texture characters, reducing my workload a lot and allowing me to focus on something that I specialise in. Furthermore, I will be researching into what job requirements I will need to acquire the job. By researching into the job requirements of my dream job, I will be able to plan out a path of improvement for myself so that I can eventually get that dream job that I am aiming for. This could mean that I will need to have specific models within my Portfolio to fulfil the requirements of the job, or have skills in certain programs and proof of those skills.
Finally a good thing for me to research will be the culture of the jobs and benefits they give people. As most people would, I would like to work within a game company that shares my ideals in some way, so I would be looking for a company that likes to either improve their employee’s portfolios or putting the employee first rather than the game. Rather than working for a company that is constantly in crunch (overtime).
