Captain Citrus and the Crass Commercialism of Corporate Comics – Shelfdust
"In a bizarre promotional video filmed at Tampa’s now-shuttered Heroes’ Haven Comics, Marvel editor Bill Rosemann and Florida Dept. of Citrus rep Doug Ackerman over-explained Captain Citrus to justify one of the most expensive comic books ever produced. Ackerman described the creation as “a character that’s easily understood by our next generation of our loyal customers,” while Rosemann made sure to note “he must lead a life that’s full of nutrition.”
The plan was to get Captain Citrus into 4000 schools nationwide, though there’s no telling if he even successfully made it into one. A couple of animated commercials were produced in 2015 and CaptainCitrus.com still takes you to a webpage with free worksheets for kids, but for all intents and purposes, the Captain Citrus experiment seemed to be dead less than a year after the comic book launched.
