âKohei Saito, Marx in the Anthropocene: Toward the Idea of Degrowth Communism
See âsolastalgiaâ, a term coined by an Australian philosopher to âdescribe the existential melancholy induced by environmental change.â
Apparently geologists will soon vote on whether to accept the claim that we are in the geological epoch known as the Anthropocene.
âThe AWG [Anthropocene Working Group] will present a proposal to make the Anthropocene official to the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy later this summer. If the subcommissionâs members agree with a 60% majority, the proposal will then pass on to the International Commission on Stratigraphy, which will also have to vote and agree with a 60% majority for the proposal to move onward for ratification.â What will be the outcome of the vote?
Effective ideologies blur the lines between empirical realities and political interpretation. Some members of the human species are indeed driving planetary life into the planetary inferno. This geological and geohistorical transition is often narrated as the Anthropocene, the Age of Man. Major corporate news platforms â like The New York Times and The Economist â are very happy with that formula, Age of Man. It supports an ideological claim â the idea of Man as a collective actor, the âhuman enterpriseâ â with another: Good Science. Itâs not a new trick. Invoking natural law is ancient sport in capitalism. Malthus did it. The eugenicists did it. Paul Ehrlich and neo-Malthusians did it again after 1968. In every case, itâs a means of erasing capitalist webs of power, profit and life behind the planetary crisis. It is a way of short-circuiting the possibility that working classes will grasp the climate crisis as capital-induced rather than human-induced: as the result of capitalogenic rather than anthropogenic forcing.
Jason W. Moore, Opiates of the Environmentlists? Anthropocene Illusions, Planetary Management & The Capitalocene Alternative
The Black ecological practices highlighted in this essay offer guidance for constructing an ethicoâpolitical vision that addresses the multiple global crises of the plantation present. These practices are founded upon a basic understanding that ecological care, multispecies kinship, and social justice are fundamental to the development of a human praxis that promotes wellâbeing. As such, they go beyond theorization and provide some of the âhow to'sâ for realizing this vision. As outlined by authors in Black studies, these practices illuminate the critical role of racial struggle, borne on colonial plantations, in producing a more relational world. Hence, we are dissatisfied with theorizations of the Plantationocene that minimize the ways in which racial politics structure plantation life (both human and nonhuman). Such approaches limit a more nuanced and grounded understanding of the ways that the plantation inflicts socioecological violence as it simultaneously prompts differentiated, multifaceted, and relational ways of being. Sustained attention to race in Plantationocene scholarship is therefore crucial to the conception and practice of socioecological justice and multispecies kinship.
Thus, we acknowledge the need for a radical awareness of the plantation's role in producing global environmental change. However, an interest in ecological ethics must not overshadow attention to the dynamics of power (racial, gender, sexual, or otherwise). The destructive impacts of these processes stem, in no small part, from natureâsociety dualisms. In the quest to dismantle this binary logic, we must recognize the numerous Black, Brown, and Indigenous peoples who have, for many years, advanced nonâbinary conceptions of the humanânonhuman relationship.
Authors in natureâsociety disciplines would do well to seek guidance from scholars and organic intellectuals from these groups in finding alternative ways of living in relation. For example, scholarship in Black studies shows that fostering relational modes of being demands that narratives of social and ecological death, decay, and destruction must be emphasized and also further understood as fertile ground containing possibilities for life, wellness, and wholeness emerging from collective struggle. Moreover, an examination of Black plantation ecologies reveals the necessity of vision (or theorization) as well as everyday practice (e.g., reflexivity, selfâdiscovery, creativity, solidarity work, etc.) in making kin. This often involves breeches of power as norms, rules, and law must be transgressed. Thus, taking risks and striving collectively is necessary for cultivating relationships across difference.

Donât believe Malthusian eugenics propaganda about human population levels being out of control. The planet is not overpopulated, only over-exploited.Â

The Ideology of Human Supremacy
The Ideology of Human Supremacy
The somber truth is that the vast bulk of natureâs staggering abundance has already disappeared. We live in a world characterized primarily by the relative silence and emptiness of its natural spaces. Underlying this devastation is the ideology of human supremacyâclaiming intrinsic superiority over nonhuman forms of life. But is human supremacy innate to humanity, or rather something specificâŚ

"I would not focus on rebelling against extinction. Can one even rebel against extinction? I donât think so. You can deal with extinction. You have to deal with extinction. Extinction, by the way, is not the worst thing that one can imagine for the future. The worst thing imaginable is the war that will lead to extinctionânot death, but the long-lasting agony that financial capitalism has prepared for humankind. This is the real danger. Extinction is not so bad, if we compare it to capitalism."
