capable shifts a bit, green eyes bright in the dimming skylight. QUIET? she hadn’t even noticed. in truth, she hadn’t even realized how much time had passed until she took note of the setting sun and the hazy glow it cast over the salt. but her mind had been full, full of oneface, one VOICE, one p e r s o n.

she presses one hand to the skin of her cheek, lips pursed for a bit before she decides to speak again, her voice softer, no more than a brush on the desert air.

It’s been hours. Or was it days? Time feels meaningless; incalculable. What is time, anyway? Compared to the endless expanse of the wasteland before and behind them? All around them? What is time, when their destination feels as distant as a dream, and the only direction in her memory screams: East?

It drips by anyway, time. Slides through their fingers and through the air. Whistles around the cab and hangs heavy on them, weighing them down. The heat is a cloying conspirator and together with grief they make a heady combo.

All she wants to do is sleep.

She keeps driving.

She’d stopped the Fool an hour or two after it happened, with a soft, barely-there word and a hand placed gentle on the steering wheel.

“Let me,” she’d offered, not out of kindness (though he looked as haggard as the rest of them) but out of need, selfish and burning. She couldn’t sit idly by, a passenger to her anger and grief. She had never handled the latter well.

Driving gave her a task. Driving distracted, if only for the meager effort it took to keep the rig moving. This way, her eyes are on the rocks outside the window, scouting for buzzards. This way, she’s only looking forward, never back.

She keeps seeing the flutter of muslin out of the corner of her eye.

“Yeah,”

“--me too.”
