ok kiddos listen up, the trade deadline is February 25th this year. soooo we gotta wait til Febuary 26th to sign Jeff bc he was signed off of UFA status for one year. the deadline has to pass for one reason: time
if we signed him today there is only 2.3 mil in cap space with no major contracts expiring this year besides Pomminville (who I dot see being traded bc hes a great veteran leader but not putting up points as well as he should so idk)
also: we cant sign him because he would only be eligible for a 7 year contract. if we wait just a few more months we can get him for 8 years to play with jack and maybe start a strong few years for us poor poor fans who have suffered
take this with a grain of salt bc I'm not that smart and could be missing something big

What happens if a team goes over the salary cap? Do they have a luxury tax like in baseball?
From what I can tell it’s very complicated and does not include a luxury tax. First of all, going over the salary cap blatantly is impossible the League has to approve of every contract or trade you make and they will not approve a contract that makes the team non compliant. So that kind of thing just won’t happen. However, if a team knowingly tries this, the league can still suspended those involved including the license of the players agent if it’s decided he knew what was happening.
But there’s the idea of circumventing the rules and I don’t know what a good example of this is. but if a team somehow circumvents the cap rules the punishments can be any or any mixture of the following:
1. a fine of 1 million to 5 million dollars taken directly from next years salary cap.
2. The player can get fined anywhere from 250,000 to 1 million dollars
3. the team forfeits draft picks
4. the team forfeits the games in which they were circumventing the cap
5. the team gets audited
6. The contract that put them over gets voided
7. Suspending the employees who were involved in the contract.
