Is there anything more ancient or more powerful than the folk? And if so, can a mortal witness it without suffering a broken mind?
There are stories, Child. Stories of illuminated beings with multiple sets of golden wings, more eyes than you can count, and rings of fire. Serpents that slither through darkness, water, and empty skies….searching for worlds to break within its coils. Creatures that exist only in the realms of thought, touching here and there into the minds of the already mad, searching for those who can hear their angry voice. Guardians that sit at the gates of Time and Death, waiting for the physical world to come to an end so that they may be free from their bonds and bring destruction upon every universe they come to.
A monster that dwells within the hidden world within a black hole, a being made of trapped starlight and bone, of forgotten wishes and broken hearts. It sings softly to itself of things that were never meant to be and of utter despair, and its song is the only thing that escapes its prison, to drift out into the world and into the ears of far too many.
There are many such beings, more than any number man has ever encountered, and they exist not in a far away place, but different realms and layers of reality beyond your own. Some are only a few distant layers away, enough to see you as pale shadows or ghosts. Others are entirely unaware that anything such as a mortal creature even exists. They would not understand you, just as you would be unable to understand them.
You are correct in your assumption that most mortal minds would simply break. Already Faerie alone stretches the limits of your imaginations, of what you can comprehend. There are those who go mad at Faerie alone. Only mortals whose minds have already grown far beyond what can truly be called ‘Human’ would even have a chance at remaining whole at seeing such a being. But they are there, just beyond your ability to see. In directions you cannot look. Painted in colors you cannot perceive. Singing songs your ears are not made for.
