Days of Horror - Day 16: The Green Inferno (2013) Cannibal Holocaust is a film well known for its controversy because not only did it depict extremely graphic violence that lead many viewers around the time of its release believe that it was actually a snuff film because none of the actors were reachable following the film's release, but it also displays the actual mutilation of real animals, which is just sad. The Green Inferno also recieved backlash because of the way it depicted the indigenous tribe featured in the movie, EVEN THOUGH they were all in on the film and were excited to shoot. While the story of the Green Inferno isn't great, the acting is solid, and the special effects are fucking incredible. The first half of the film is slow, but the second act completely makes up for time you've invested in thus far. Basically, the main character decides to go on a trip to the Amazon with her friend and a college professor to protest the deforestation of the home of a tribe of people who inhabit the rainforest. Little do they know is that their efforts are in vain, for the main character and her friends find themselves stuck in the midst of betrayal, survival and flesh eating people. While the story isn't much to write home about, I can't help but wanting to see the main character win. She's well developed and likable despite being naive, but she becomes a worthy adversary for her kidnappers as she uses her width and cunning to survive. We see real growth and develop respect for her struggle to survive. I think the movie deserves more credit than backlash, as it revived a genre of film mostly known for being torture porn, and it pays homage to the many Italian filmmakers who pioneered the cannibal horror genre. Just keep in mind that this film is not for people with weak stomachs, but it's hard to not be amazed by some sick special effects. Fun fact is that this movie has a similar plot to the Season 3 Ep. 1 of South Park called Rainforest Shmainforest.
