Something seems simpler about Cankun’s 3rd LP for Hands in the Dark, but it may be an illusion. Perhaps the uncomplicated vibe of Only The Sun Is Full Of Gold’s one-word song titles have coaxed me to hear simplicity in music that’s just as rich and dense as Cankun’s previous work – and I’ve no doubt that it is that rich and dense. But there’s a primacy, an immediacy, to Vincent Caylet’s sounds here that feels like he’s carving out a new kind of sonic space, despite the music sounding unmistakably like everything he’s done as Cankun.

Maybe it’s just that his spells are now so sharp and powerful that they work faster than before. I feel like I get inside the core of this music almost as soon as it starts playing, and no matter how many fascinating layers of dubby beat, humid haze, or shimmering guitar Caylet piles into his songs, there’s always a spine to hang onto like a ladder in a windstorm. That’s actually strongest on the catchiest tunes, my favorite being “Words”, which has a hook so bright it could warm the sun. The gold Caylet finds there isn’t pristine, but its shine remains strong.

I will always remember the first piano notes on After the Flood by Talk Talk. Every time I listen to this moment, it's just like time stopped. A thousand wonderful images travel in my mind. Pure emotion. It's like a generous act of giving something without hoping for anything in return. That was somehow my state of mind when I started this record: giving the most emotion possible to the listener. Lots of different things and images travelled in my mind when I was recording, too. I've always been a dreamer. This record is also my humble devotion to nature. I think you can hear it amongst all of my records – well, I hope. The more I recorded, the more the songs went darker. The first song was “Words” and the last “Tyreu”. Don't know what Cankun will become in the next coming weeks/months, right now I feel like it has to be stopped, but it often changes. I would like to thank (again) Morgan and Britt, without them Cankun would be nothing.
