Calvin Candie enjoyed a great many aspects of his wealthy life. Gracing the garden slaves with his presence that afternoon while he sipped on some cool fresh lemonade in the baking heat, striding along the small paved garden path in no particular direction and looking out over his endless fields of cotton and slaves as far as the eye could see like a God looking over his creation, enjoying the absolute fear, hatred and terror he inspired for all of those who had the misfortune of crossing onto the Candyland plantation.

Indulging in a small puff on his pipe as he smiled with rotten teeth out into the fields, seeing as the women apparently worked all the harder under his gaze and thinking of Cora's passing phrase of warnings to the House Staff still in 'training' in their enforced servitude to the family. 'Stay on his blind side', and he relished in the sheer dread and unease he caused his workers who had of course seen him kill slaves in the most horrendous of ways for even the slightest infringement of his expectations.

There was however one face that didn't seem to belong, a young girl, white in a pretty dress on the long entrance road to his vast estate. He frowned, puffed a few more times on his pipe and wondered what some strange little girl was doing on his plantation. Suspicious but not daring to jeopardise the thin mask of a gentleman, Calvin thrust his pipe and lemonade glass into the hands of a slave to hold as if he were a shelf. "Stay righ' there now Ol' Joe," he instructed the man with a pointed patronising finger.
