Helianthus gracilentus, the Slender Sunflower, is a perennial sunflower native to southern California and Baja California mostly in semi-coastal chaparral and light pine forests. Where the more commonly seen Helianthus annuus only lasts through one good growing season, H. gracilentus persists indefinitely with woody stems instead of pith-filled stems which allow the annual sunflower to grow quickly and last just long enough to set seed and die. Where the annual sunflower has many cultivars ranging from ones with multi-kilogram heads to branched habits producing many smaller flowers in a season, H. gracilentus can produce blooms for most of the year in gentle climates, only needing a break in the coldest months of the year and persisting through a hot, dry summer through the aid of a stout taproot.

✨Summer in the Garden ✨ 🌺🌼🌴🌲🌫 Dahlia is a small genus with approximately 40 species and is a member of the Asteraceae family. Dahlias are native throughout Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. Dahlias have been cultivated for centuries, notably by the Aztecs who ate the tubers, which are still used in some Oaxacan cuisine. Today, though, Dahlias are more popular as ornamental plants and there are over 50,000 registered cultivars. The dahlia is San Francisco's official flower. The Dahlia Garden located next to our friends at @conservatoryofflowers here in Golden Gate Park is in bloom now, too. These Dahlia pinnata and Dahlia coccinea are located on the northern edge of the Dwarf Conifer Pond in an area transitioning to a new sunny Mesoamerican collection extension. ☀️ More fun summer highlights to see now: • Lilium ‘Lavon’ in Garden of Fragrance • California Native Plant Garden summer specials—coyote mint, sticky monkey flower, and lizard tail (Monardella villosa, Diplacus aurantiacus, Eriophyllum staechadifolium) • Erica with friends and Berkheya purpurea in South Africa Garden • Nikau palm (Rhopalostylis sapida) grove in New Zealand Garden • More lilies and textures in the Zellerbach Garden of Perennials • Albino redwood sprouts in the Redwood Grove • #TraveltheWorldin55Acres #SFBotanicalGarden #Dahlia #Lily #CANativePlants #SouthAfricanPlants #NewZealandPlants #NikauPalm #AlbinoRedwood #Redwoods #WorldEmojiDay (at San Francisco Botanical Garden) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRcI_u9NCeQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

#PaeoniaCalifornica / #CaliforniaPeony. I once saw someone say that this plant “looks like something straight out of the Cretaceous” & I think that’s very fitting. They look ancient & bizarre. I’m kind of in love with them & I’m trying really hard to propagate a few from seed (advice appreciated!). This patch comes up every year & I was worried when someone cut down the #chaparral right above them, but they seem happier than ever so far. ❤️ Enjoy several photos of these weirdos! #californianativeplants #canativeplants #califloral #wildflowers #californiawildflowers #sandiegowildflowers (at Jamul, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLFGcV-j2pr/?igshid=1q8fovs4jq5jc
Summer is winding down. Hard to believe as we are going to have weather in the mid-80’s for the next couple weeks. However, it’s getting cooler at nights and very wet in the mornings. I just applied the last food of the season for the lawn. I had a great time in the yard this summer. Have been planting a lot of California native plants the past couple years and started hand watering and have seen our water bills go down dramatically. We have created our own mini-ecosystem here and it is fun to see. Lots of happy animals around these parts that have kept pretty much everything in check. I no longer have to spray any chemicals or use any fertilizers - Mother Nature is doing her thing and it’s amazing to watch. Have a good rest of your week! ————————————— #garden #gardening #organicgardening #canativeplants #nativeplants #biodiversity #roses #bougainvillea #ecofriendly #nofilter (at Faircrest Heights, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE6-005p_7P/?igshid=1cc4gocw0ucw6
Flower from hollyleaf cherry (Prunus ilicifolia). Though the flowers are tiny, they grow in a tight cluster on a racemes around 1’ to 1.5’ inches long.
