I think a lot of people that bemoan the epilogues as mischaractirising the characters have either never read them or simply got mad one of their headcanons were invalidated.
Take June being an absent parent. We can clearly see how the retcon greatly impacted June's mental health and sense or reality even in the credits of the comic. When she goes and chooses candy and sees how 'out of character' everyone is, she starts losing her grip on reality even more. Remember, June was always an airhead that had to learn when to take things seriously. She's one of the few characters that knows that she's just a character in a story, and worse, all her friends are too. Of course when she heard Roxy was having a baby she just left. Roxy isn't a person anymore, she's a cupboard cutout with a grin on it.
June inevitably has to learn that no matter how "canon" her seroundings may be, the people around her and herself are real in this one timeline. They feel things, they have ambitions and dreams, even if June finds them absurd.
June being an absant parent is very much in character behevior for her at the point in the story, people don't like it because of their binary morality system. "June is one of the good guys and now June bad mom?????" A heroic character cannot do something bad, so it surely must just be out of character. They don't take into consideration that June already had the basis for her absentee tendancies in the original comic. They just don't like that June did something bad.
