I had the honor of speaking at #CalltoSafety’s Visionary Awards Ceremony and fundraiser last night with the closing remarks. It wasn’t easy keeping my composure following our honoree @appleton_a and her incredibly raw, moving words that hit me to my core. Alexandra Appleton devotes her time in multiple capacities: consistently using a racial justice lense to speak out for survivors; often working all day at a local non-profit shelter; volunteering with multiple agencies dedicated to survivors, anti-racism, and housing equity, before returning home to her three young children. Much of this work is unpaid and yet, she approaches it with admirable commitment. On a daily basis, Alexandra is modeling to her children the importance of working towards equity and social justice. She courageously speaks out for marginalized populations and those impacted by an intersection of oppressions, even when she is the only one in the room doing so. In her limited "down" time, Alexandra has been known to help others who are facing challenges similar to her own experiences. The Visionary Award Reception is about recognizing an individual who reflects our core values: empowerment, survivor-led services, and community education. Social justice-centered, mutual support, and unity are all adjectives which can be used to describe Alexandra and her actions. I cannot wait to see what Alexandra does next because I know she is going places while persistently elevating the voice of people impacted by domestic and sexual violence, racism, and houselessness. It is with a mixture of sadness and profound gratitiude that we, the Call to Safety Board of Directors,announce Rebecca Nickels' departure as Executive Director, effective December 27, 2017. Rebecca's inspiring, dedicated, and full-hearted leadership over the past 11 years will leave a permanent legacy at Call to Safety, with our participants and in the community at large. Her hard work and devotion to the agency's mission led to several significant accomplishments over her tenure, including: (in comments) Over the coming months, we will conduct a systematic search to find Call to Safety's next Executive Director. During this transition period, it is our priority to identify the best leader for the agency while maintaining a stable and effective organization. Our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters will miss her tremendously. We look forward to following her continued success in her next venture and are excited for Call to Safety's next chapter!
