4 Calf Exercises You Can Do At Home
For some reason, a lot of people tend to overlook their calf muscles. Nothing looks stranger than someone with a well built upper body but scrawny undefined calf muscles. Luckily, getting your calf muscles nice and strong is a little easier than you might think. In fact, you can get started right at home. Here are 4 calf exercises you can do at home.
1: Double Calf Raised
These are probably the easiest to do. Find a ledge around your house. Stairs work perfectly. Stand with the balls of your feet on the ledge, then slowly raise up on your tip toes and hold for about a half second then back down. When you go down, your heels should be hanging below the the ledge. If you want to make it a bit more difficult, hold something in each hand to add some weight. If you have dumbbells, those work well. Or you can even use a couple gallons of water or milk.
2: Single Calf Raises
The single calf raise is pretty much identical to the double except with one leg at a time. Make sure that you have something close by to hold on to so you can keep your balance. If you want to use weights with this one, hold your weight on the same side you're calf raising (if you're lifting the left calf, hold with the left hand). Bend the other leg behind you. Lift for about half a second, then come back down and repeat. Alternate legs.
3: Seated Calf Raises
Don't think that just because this exercise has the word seated in it that it's going to be easy! In order to do this, find a place to sit down. For the best results, put something underneath your feet so you can have a ledge to get a full range of motion when you do your raises. A piece of wood or a stack of old books would work (get creative :)). Next take some dumbbells and hold them on your thighs to have some resistance. Then lift just like with the double and single calf raises. Repeat the motion. You can do this one calf at a time or both together.
4: Swiss Ball Leaning Calf Raises
This exercise is pretty fun, but it does require that you have a Swiss ball (commonly referred to as an exercise ball). In order to do this, place the exercise ball between your chest and a wall. Your body should be at an angle, don't worry you won't fall! Hold a dumbbell (or the good ol gallon jugs) in each hand. Then raise up onto the balls of your feet, hold for about a second and come back down. Repeat this motion. You can do this with a single leg or with both.
