It’s called “STOP THE WORLD” after the musical “STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF,” which was one of the first, if not the first, shows my mother and Larry did in the late 1960s @theatrethree in Dallas. Larry was one of the most important people in my early life (and beyond). The painting itself comes from a photograph taken of us in 1976 in the greenroom backstage. As I wrote in an earlier post some years back: “Larry made people laugh till they cried and mad till they laughed. The theater, when it’s working in top form, is like a branch of lightening flashed across the stage, touching all, sparing nothing. He could cast it, ride it, extend it, double it, bend it, break it, show it or keep it, and break your heart with it too. He was a master showman, for a time a professor of theater at Bennington, an eventual member of the Baltimore Center Stage where he won the 2009 Helen Hayes Award for his role in THE FANTASTICS (which he’d taken on three days prior to opening due to another actor, um, not working out), and the dearest friend a “child” could ever have. Thank you to Larry O’Dwyer for saving my mind more than once and for being there in my earliest days when the music of Cole Porter, Russel Crouse and Howard Lindsay’s ANYTHING GOES went straight to my heart, and started my current problems with poetry.” And now painting, too! DRYING RACK HEAVEN! I love having all these open slots for new work! After buying four drying racks and sending three back I ended up with this “Pro Drying Rack” from @paintline and I couldn’t be happier with it. The thing has 50 shelves and each one holds up to 25 lbs. Caley at maybe 5 or 6 years old? This is a photo of the underpainting—an excerpt— for a larger oil painting of my godfather Larry O’Dwyer and I from around 1976 (I think?). The original photograph I’m working from, which I’ll plan to share when I finish the painting shows us dressed up as clowns in the dressing room of Theatre Three in Dallas, Texas. I spent the first 10 years of my life in the light booth, greenroom, dressing rooms, costume shop, etc. of Theater Three @theatrethree. I’m considering to do a series of paintings based to some extent on photographs of my life in the theater, a life mostly lived on the edges and peripheries of the stage. My parents, Camilla Carr Anhalt and Hugh Feagin, both really excellent actors, brought me into the theater from day one. I was literally in a baby carriage in the green room, and I am hugely drawn to memories of theater, the rehearsal halls, the water fountain outside the theater, the voices of singers rehearsing for Company and other musicals—Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, etc,—the voices so surging and beautiful, how we were all awake, alive, and there in the 1970s. A simpler, less mediated, but also, in its own ways, turbulent, politically complex time.
