A few of the original researchers  - some 20 year veterans - were unable to participate becasue of being high risk, and trained their replacement via facetime etc. over a few days.

This is an annual cruise that sometimes people from my agency participate in - we used to do part of the cruise ourselves when we had our own larger scale research vessel. The data from it is used to inform the state of the California Current and plankton sampling for fish larvae is used in bioassessments of species like Pacific Sardine, Northern Anchovy and Pacific Mackerel.

(I also didn’t realize the R/V Sally Ride actually belonged to the Navy - she’s operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography under a charter agreement with the Office of Naval Research. )
