Two different versions of the same landscape. These are the cabinet mountains from across bull lake in Montana. . They're not perfect and I'm not sure whether to claim that I like the simplicity or that I wanted a couple cedars in the foreground to frame the image, but couldn't find a composition I liked and the light on the mountains and highlighting the trees that attracted me to take a photo faded while I looked around for a good spot, so I figured I should just take the picture from an open area. . I also wanted to do a super long exposure, but didn't get that quite right so the first photo is a shorter exposure (several seconds) and the second is an hdr of three longer ones that were each around a minute or two but all three underexposed. Neither image got the ethereal looking water and sky I imagined. I think the pictures are still pretty good, just not what I was going for. . I'll probably try it again soon. There seems to be a short window in the late afternoon before the mountains behind rise above the sun and block the light where the mountains look really cool and the highlights and shadows on the trees are really good. But I think a really long exposure when the sun is low and light changing fast isn't actually a good idea and makes the picture flatter. . It's not a style I love, but I think it'd work better to do three separate exposures for sky, water, and trees/mountains. I don't think I'd bother with a polarizer next time, either. All of this is why I don't really find landscape photography that fun. But still, I like to try to capture it when I see a pretty landscape. . Also, I'm getting excited for some spring scenery.
