“This is so good,” Laurel said as she ate the pieces of watermelon. “We should do this more often, why don’t we do this more?”

Clary jumped when Mark spoke behind her. “Jesus Christ, Hexner, one of these days I’m going to accidentally punch you if you keep scaring the crap out of me.”

Laurel was zoned out, all the voices around her felt so far away. She wasn’t sure if she was even focused more on not shifting, or focused more on her panic. She heard a voice behind her and she cleared her throat to try and speak. It felt like there was cotton in her mouth, “I’m sorry, what did you say?”

"You mean to tell me that we’re safer, all stuck in this place? That’s outrageous,” Kinsey said to another. 

After Brianne left, and Nina came to visit for a bit, Emma was in panic and did her best to hide it throughout her work day. So she sent Evie that text message needing to see them. She just needed to make sure Duncan was never going to be found. And maybe even convince them to leave town just for a bit. If Nina came home early it would just look like her older sister was visiting her. She had done a pretty damn good job keeping Evie and Mark out of this so far. Hearing a knock on the door, she moved over to it and opened it. “Hey. Come in.” She moved aside to let them both in.

“I–” was all Mark got out before Parker was hugging him and so Mark returned it with a cheek kiss. “Hello to you, too,” he said with a chuckle as he eyed the other man.

Parker was excited to see the other. “You- what?” he inquired wondering if the other had something important to say. He couldnt contain himself, and just had to give him a hug. As they separated from the hug, he laughed a bit. “Hey there, how you’ve been handsome?”

      She wished she could trust the words that left their lips; however, deceit tended to follow everywhere they went. No one accepted her, how could she assume he did either? She had arrived to college, hearing yet another rumour about her. One that remained a rumour, no truth behind it. She did not feel supported, not even by him, her best friend.  “I’m a laughing stock--- yet you choose to laugh along with them?” She spoke, eyes moving to look at Mark with hurt eyes. “I thought I could trust you to stand up for me.”
