from deep bass to tight breaks in just 38 mins for my newcastle fam, this is the 4th and last guest mix for 2021. you can catch the whole 2-hour show on soundcloud here. one to 2022, this year i'll revive and reshape 'lo flow', my old weekly radio show from 1996-2010. watch this space.
bassbase is five!
bassbase turned five! after supplying floods of paragraphs to some prestigious paper mags over a decade, i started this microblog to get the best bass related bits of my mates in a searchable archive. since i was an early dubstep adopter in 2003 and i did my part as a dj / promoter / journalist, i was enjoying a massive dubplate support of the key figures and labels of the bass scene.
some might ask why bassbase is not sticking to any genres. in the beginning i posted more so-called dubstep, which in my opinion was more like an aesthetic value, a producing approach than a genre. well, as the former multifaceted dubstep sound was evolving into something through it's revolutionary global expansion, i was shifting back to my former self to play everything that i find innovative or original enough. that’s why you can find a wider selection of bass heavy tunes. however, you still hear all the elements i loved in the early dubstep and before that in the '90s so much. dub, rhythm, repetition, new approaches.
anytime i was playing a 'dubstep' set, people were describing with the words dub, techno, electronica, house, hip-hop, 2step, breaks or jungle. in fact, i was just playing a wider range of dubstep/bass music.
anyway, on this platform you never saw long essays, so let my set explain what bassbase is about :) thanks to you for every likes, reblogs, follows, notes and dubplates/promos in the past five years!
i've built an enormous mix archive of my past 20 years behind the decks. sharing is caring, so let me swing you back to the millennium with a mix i did to promote our radio station. this is how i was rolling drum'n'bass back then. hope some of you remembers to all those mighty gigs we threw at many locations including the tv tower on the cover picture. ok, it's your turn now. share your memories!
the set was recently removed from urbanplayer's soundcloud, so please welcome it on mixcloud.
i was offered to make a soundtrack by a fresh blog on fire for the weekend of the most anticipated hungarian festival called Balaton Sound. instead of a mix that fits with the load of loud stars at the festival, i chosed to make a sonic shelter for the weary ears and souls. by selecting some of my beloved electronica artists and labels, the podcast have become a refreshing haven for the period of the marching bassdrum menace through the weekend. this is a rare guided tour in my kingdom outside the clubs. welcome to my living room.

the past 17 years of surfing on airwaves made me feel a bit empty without having a regular show. since my last show launched in 2008 on sub.fm, i've been just having guest appearances on various stations. now, my monthly bassweight showcase has finally found a new home at london's rood.fm. from august 2013 you can catch me playing at 4-6pm (gmt) on the last friday of every month and well, expect the usual boundary breaking bass flow.
in this show of old fashioned 2 decks live recording you get many hybrids between 115-150 bpm, from huge classics to unreleased dubplates, from fairy melodies to wrecking basslines. i prefer blending the aesthetics of many styles and genres, what you can experience on my second rood.fm ride. be my guest!

well. i'm not just talking, but doing things finally, so prepare your bassbins for sound system music. years passed without guest mixes, therefor i accepted the offer of tshabee and prodee from debrecen/hungary for their debstep radio show on sub.hu radio. i was trying to find out what dublin and "dubrecen" has in common and we have set a new listening record with that. you wanted the archive bad, now i serve it. expect a mixture of dub elements, electronica and techno/dubstep crossover for big loada bass.
