Abigail pauses outside the door of Borgin and Burke’s. Somehow, she’s more nervous to tell Flora about the engagement than she had been with either her or Charles’ families. Perhaps because Flora’s opinion matters more to her than that of her father and grandmother, and while she’d been sure that at least Sarah and Edgar would greet the news with enthusiasm, she’s less certain of Flora’s reaction. Of course, her friend will be happy for her, that she knows, but she also knows Flora is insecure about her own marital prospects. With a steadying breath, she pushes the door open, waiting until she’s made eye contact with Flora to speak.Â
“Are you busy?” She keeps her hands at her sides, not wanting Flora to see the ring before she shows it to her.
