The lectures by Andy and Karen have been nothing but beneficial and helpful, you guys put years of expertise into weekly classes for us to absorb, and I am so thankful to receive such in-depth resources from you.

I also want to thank Ben for giving me weekly entertainment as well as useful websites for us to look for inspiration. Your classes have always made me laugh and I love how friendly you are to all of us. Every time we meet, it feels a big group of design nerds talking about our passion, rather than having a formal class.

My classmates in this course have also gave me motivation as well as inspiration. When i’m having an artist block, I scroll through tumblr and look at all the amazing work done by other students (my brain suddenly becomes less dead and it starts functioning again). I talk to them via social media, too. We discuss about progress, give each other feedback, or we cry together about how screwed we are for the assignments.

Despite all the things going on in the world, I am still happy that I get to have this chance to learn from the most talented people and surround myself with the beauty of design. I hope next semester will all be back to normal and I can finally walk around campus with my friends.

Prypress is a Singaporean publish company that showcases various art and designs, they collaborate with artists and designers to produce zines, books, and prints. Their goal is to give exposure to new designers and well for the consumers to experience the numerous ways of design.

Perspektif is an online magazine who is run by PPIA (an Indonesian student-led organization by the University of Melbourne). They produce magazines every two years that are made up of submissions from around the world, they also host events such as photography workshops and book fairs.

I liked the fact that both of the publishers value new talents, they try to showcase new arts and designs by using their platforms to give them exposure. The works they displayed were also very diverse in style and medium, which gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas for how I can work on my future subjects.

In conclusion, very eventful, very cool.

The bialetti logo- a character created half a century ago- is now a recognizable icon of kitchens appliances all over the world.

Bialetti completed his design for the aluminum Moka Express in 1933, but it wasn’t until the 50’s where the infamous character was created. The company made a huge investment in Carosello, a well-known Italian television program, and focused on marketing around the image of the “Little Man with the Moustache”.

The character- drawn by Paul Campani- was based on the founder of the Moka Pot, Alfonso Bialetti. Campani rendered the character to relay the company’s quirky dynamic. The straight vertical arm and finger can be read as a visual jolt of caffeine, or the impulse to order another cup of coffee. the mustache-friendly coffee icon gradually wormed its way into pop culture and cemented Bialetti as a brand for the ages. This logo is still present on the Bialetti Industrie Group’s trademark and applied to the brand’s products. 

“Symbols are a succinct and efficient way of communicating information about your business.” Having a logo is more than just finding the image of the company, it’s about delivering an effective first impression for its clients without even knowing what the company is about. 

I really like the Bialetti mascot, it’s cute, timeless, and simple. It captures the Italian roots of the Moka Pot with its mustache and attire, giving the consumer some back story of the brand without even using words.

The pictures were an activity called “Typeface in my pocket” where we would design our names using objects in our bags, very simple yet inspiring. The pictures shown in order were the four compositions I came up with. Looking at them now, I can definitely tell I was slowing throwing the limitations away with each of the designs and just letting my creative mind flow.

We also did a collaborative work where each table spelled the whole English alphabet with numbers 1 to 9. Everyone had their own ideas on how to design each alphabet, but effective communications and discussions between our group members were what made the results possible. It’s important to listen but also speak up when doing group work, let your voice be heard!

Since communication design is all about effective communication, I felt like this would be an appropriate question to ask myself as well as the audience.

With my theme of efficiency in mind, I looked for things that I would use on the daily (like stationary) to tie my work back to my question. I stuck my stationary items on the bulletin wall in my student room and took three pictures in total. I made the word “design’ as the emphasis by using a cable to create a dramatic composition. The cable also creates movement, making the whole piece less static and still. Take note that all the words have the orange pins, it serves as a string to tie the three pictures together- to build cohesion and harmony.

Being an international student who arrived here recently, my student room is still pretty empty with limited things in it. It was not easy to find things that I can utilize with, but it turned out okay and I’m relived.

Case Study: As this project is to represent a topic culture and its personality, I attempted to not get off-topic with my research. For the written part of the project, I used both pictures and context to increase reader efficiency. I utilized purpose-oriented research methods to develop a viable creative proposal that promotes a delightful presentation and with effective understanding.

Design Artifact: I based my design artifact on the traditional Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) and the flower of Japan (the Camellia), with a slight twist. I did a logo design that is versatile for any company that has a Japanese background. I wanted to make the logo true to its Japanese heritage, but also making it interesting and pleasing to look at so it can reach a wider audience.  I was heavily inspired by Shiseido’s logo (the font and color ) they expressed freshness, newness, and femininity while keeping its history. It was my first time making a logo via illustrator. not gonna lie, I felt like it could have been better, but I did what I could as a beginner (literally).

Week 11's lecture talks all about the future of design. Andy and Karen actively addressed the path in which design is going, keeping in mind the quickly evolving technology and resources that designers are now able to utilize. some of the technology include parametric and generative design practices, data visualisation. It lastly explained how communication design in general is transforming through emerging technologies like machine learning and A.I.

The lecture reminded me of a quote by Adrian Frutiger, how be believed the written word will remain the means of creating a connection between those who have something to say and those who want to hear it.
